It's that time of year again when I feel so grumpy that I have summer children! Every year it's the same problem...what to do for birthday parties on a budget when you have to host them indoors in the a/c and your own house just wont cope with a gang of boys.

Ladies, please send me your ideas...I'm going demented! If only we were in NZ and I could book out the local Plunket rooms or church hall...or rug up and go to a park or even the garden...sniff sniff ;-)

For indoor soccer, try Ahdaaf: http://www.ahdaaf.ae/home.aspx Ask for Coach Jamal. It's just down the road from Times Square and is really reasonable. The coach will take the kids for an hour of games on the pitch which you can relax with other moms in their mezzanine area. This area has lovely mats and bean bags which we decorated with our own balloons. Brought some cake and lemonade and ordered in pizza.

some friends hired out the gym at Star School Umm Sequem - imagine you could hire that and bring in a soccer person. they did party games, but dont see why you could not do soccer. they had to be careful of floor, but took large mats and did food, etc on them, so there was no mess. worth checking into if you need indoor venue my little boy has been to a football party at Star school - I'm pretty sure it was run by the guys from IFA - worth calling them - it was a very good party - the football guy was excellent. Contact them on http://www.ifasport.com/

I have to laugh at the poster that suggested Ski Dubai and Wild Wadi! If that is her idea of a party on a budget I would love to know what she would consider a lavish one. Huh. Don't mind my hurt feelers at having been laughed at! I'm just trying to come up with ideas for a summer party ... and Wild Wadi wouldn't cost a fortune if her DS only invited a couple of friends!

What about soapy football at Jumeriah Beach, its free, all you need to take is a bottle of fairy liquid, some drinks and food,oh and a football. Kids love it, big blow up plastic football pitch which supervisor guy hoses down regularly and you add soapy stuff and the kids go skidding and sliding, great fun.

I have to laugh at the poster that suggested Ski Dubai and Wild Wadi! If that is her idea of a party on a budget I would love to know what she would consider a lavish one. Fewer and fewer kids have class parties as they get older and often at 7 plus they invite a few friends only. You could pick few friends and have a movie night and a sleep over and that would not be expensive but you run the risk of having to drop some sobbing 7 year old home at 4am! This year my son choose a family day in Ferrari World instead of a class party which was still not a cheap day! But that is another option....have a lovely family day out and send a cake to school. My other son has a birthday in June so we have a pool party at the community pool. Last year ar we used the Dunkin Donut vouchers from the entertainer to buy heaps of donuts which I arranged like a pyramid and we stuck a candle on the top. The kids were delighted and the pictures looked fab and there was no waste like with cake and half of them were free with the vouchers! I liked the iceskating using the vouchers idea. Why not go through the entertainer book and see if anything jumps out at you. The soccer guys usually go to a park or your community if suitable. I do not think they have an indoor facility and if you hire one that is your cost through the roof. All children want is to feel special for the day and I am sure he will feel that. Good luck. edited by realist on 16/04/2011

We did DS's 7th at Stargate at Zabeel park (check if it will be open) and then we had everyone come back to our house for snacks pizza and cake. They had a great time and house was not wrecked. I dont think the total bill was more than 500dhs Children's City, maybe, if Stargate is closed?

Do bowling parties still exist? Rent a couple of lanes and bring a cake?

The play area in wafi is reasonably priced, provides food also. The boys can have a good run about without wrecking your house! Also, fun city in spinneys centre is good for that age. Booking in the evening or early on a weekend day is better as its not so crowded. A trip to the cinema followed by food in Oscars. That isnt too expensive.

We did DS's party at InSportz last year - they have a range of games to choose from (football, cricket, basketball and skill games). Lots of fun!
