The whole world is a small place...

Leading on from an earlier thread where Sugarbeach asked if Dubai was that small a place I responded that the whole world is a small place.

My story:

I received a 'full' search leaving New Delhi on my way back to Perth in 2003. I had a 4 hour stop over in Singapore and desperately wanted a shower.

Due to renovations the airport facilities were closed so I went to the transit hotel in search of a room. The girl on the desk informed me they were fully booked so I told her why I needed a shower and asked if there was anyway he could help me out.

She said there was nothing she could do but offered to call the manager in case he knew of somewhere I could go. The manager walked out and it was a school classmate who I had not seen since 1986.

He walked me straight through to his office and within 10 minutes I was taking a long hot shower.

The world really is a small place. What is your story?

Good you do, think we all including myself need reminding of my post as we do not know the bigger picture. Jewelsmiddle, love your post – actually had it on my FB profile for a while. My story: during a business trip in Milan, one evening I was out shopping with a colleague when I saw a couple walking down the street towards us, him a tall man who hugely resembled my ex of 6 years with whom I lived in London, but had since the break up moved to Geneva. As they got closer, I realised it was him indeed (!) with his wife-to-be, visiting Milan for the weekend. He seemed totally embarrassed trying to explain to her who I was and struggled to reassure her it was nothing but a coincidence :)

People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that Person.. When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need You have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with Guidance and support, To aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, This person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an End. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire Fulfilled, their work is done.

On a ladies only holiday in Spain about 20 years ago, I got on very well with a girl staying at the same hotel as myself. We spent the last couple of days going around together and exchanged names and addresses like often happens. I remarked to my mother that this girl had the same name as my mothers maiden name and mother asked what her first name was. Turned out that the girl was married to my cousin who I hadn't seen or had contact with for years. We kept in touch and went off on holiday again a few years later. Bumped into her again completely by chance on weekend trip to Blackpool about six years back. Me visiting from London and her from Scotland.

My sister and I grew up in a small town in NZ where our town had 60 children attending. We both went to Japan a few years ago and visited a place called Nara in the south where I had been on a high school trip years before. We were walking up the street and I looked across the road to see a woman who looked like our primary school teacher. We crossed the road and I asked her if she was a Kiwi to which she replied she was. I then asked her if she was from our hometown and she said yes. I then asked if she was Mrs ... and she said yes! We hadn't seen her since we were 10 years old and here she was in this small town in Japan visiting her son who was an English teacher there.

While we were in Doha, we met a few nice people and were very friendly with a young couple we jokingly referred to as our "Doha son and daughter" We had a fab holiday in India during 2010 and were part of a group who had come from the UK. We flew direct to Delhi from Doha. One lunchtime we were sitting with a couple and got chatting about various things. We said we were in Doha and they said that their DD's best friend was living in Doha too and her DH worked as a surveyor and his name was *** blah blah. Guess who they were talking about? Our young friends!!! Talk about being a small world!

Years and years ago when it was still a bit 'taboo' to 'meet' people from the 'internet', I received a random email from a woman who found my email address on AOL. She wanted to chat with other North Americans in Dubai. I was extremely leery for months for all the obvious reasons. Our emails and chats started to get more frequent and friendlier until one day we started sharing a bit more 'personal' information. When it came down to which part of Dubai we lived in it turned out, she could see my front garden from her bedroom window. Neighbours!

I went to a work conference in Sydney Aust and sat next to a NZ woman. She asked me where I was from, I replied (random small town in Victoria) she replied, oh ive been there! I said really thats a strange place to go as a tourist. She said no I was there researching family history, my great grandfather is buried there. Really I ask, what was his name? Yes you guessed it, in that many sentences we established that we had a great grandfather in common.

Not me, but DH knew a couple really well (but separately) from when he was growing up in the back of beyond in Canada. They met, married and moved to Bermuda. While we were living in the UK we had DH's sister, DH and DD to visit and were in London doing the whole sightseeing thing. We bumped into this couple in the Nike store as they had a day at leisure transferring flights on a trip to Prague.

We were on a tour in Rome, heard someone calling LB! LB! another girl in our group was also called LB (;) so thought nothing of it until I turned round and saw a friend of ours. We'd been out for brunch 3 weeks before, she had been totally jealous of our holiday plans and hadn't known then that she would be in Rome on business when we were there. Also, an old colleague of DH's that we really like but rarely get to see, I've seen her twice in the Dubai airport and once, very randomly, in a shopping centre in Malacca, Malaysia. She was on holiday in Sing and did a day trip up there and we were dragging the inlaws and the yound SIL round Malaysia on holiday, very strange she would be where we were!!! Aha LB - I think I just worked out who you are!! Glad you said "we really like but rarely get to see"! Would have been a bummer if you'd said something like "can't stand her but she keeps popping up in random places"!! If it is you, you should be able to work out who I am from my user name. How are you both? Should try and catch up...

My kids were in an international school in Dubai ; their French teacher ( Algerian national) was surprised at their excellent accent and asked my son where did he learn French ..he told her my Mum is French, she asked which area , then which city....well her uncle was married to my cousin and she used to spend her holidays at her uncle's house ( 10kms from home).

I was trying to get a cab in Cairo, I saw another couple that I recognised from the hotel I was staying in. So asked if they were heading back to the hotel and if I could share the cab. On the ride back got talking and he had asked where I came from, he said he had a friend who worked there. Turned out it was somebody who I worked with and who sat just across the corridor from me.

Whilst still in the UK, I was trying to organise a ballet class for DD (I knew my priorities, didn't have house nor shipping nor packing organised, but ballet class had to be in place...), and managed to secure a place with N at Dance Horizon. Anyway, on DD's last ballet lesson in the UK, I mentioned to teacher that we were to move to Dubai etc., and in conversation found out that she grew up in Dubai and went to JESS, and that her ballet teacher was N - same as DD's ballet teacher to be!! How strange would that be - DD being taught in Dubai by the same ballet teacher who taught her UK teacher. At the time, I thought it was a small sign that Dubai was somehow meant to be. However, as it happens, N has a number of ballet teachers working for the school, and the particular class DD attends is not taken by her. Small flaw in the story. edited by Sugarbeach on 19/03/2011
