i hear you re: the paid thing but honestly the people in my building are so lovely, i often have a chat to them, and in the beginning they did look a bit surprised to have me grinning at them (i frequently hear people being oh so very rude to them)

Kelly1814 this is very refreshing to hear! However maybe I am being cynical here but most of the people you mention are paid to smile, as in they are working! I have very few complaints about the service industry and think that as a nation the filipnos have to be the happiest people in the world and for this reason I am looking into there as my next holiday :) My grumble is more with my fellow expats walking round malls, supermarkets etc who would rather examine their shoes than make eye contact. Although since posting this thread I have noticed that I am getting a few more smiles, maybe like crystalindubai other people are becoming infected :)

i'm amazed at this - i can't get out of my apartment building without everyone smiling and saying hello - usually a couple of people in the lift, the concierge, the cleaning guy, then on my walk to work there's the guys sat near the traffic lights (what do they do?!). everyone here is so friendly!

i find everyone here very friendly...i do the same - smile at strangers and they usually smile back. Manners and a smile cost nothing...
