Hi,Im at my wits end with my DS, he refuses to eat any pureed food/rice/pasta/ cereal etc. The only he will nibble at at the most are ricecakes or bread, just a few bites. He was a very good eater earlier now he just doesnt want to eat anything, or put anything in his mouth.Me and the nanny have resorted to sneaking a few bites in while distracting him with toys or while he plays around, which i know is not the best thing to do but im desperate! To add on to my owes, he doesnt sleep well at night either, making me think maybe hes still hungry, he wakes up every single night ( have tried one nap, two naps, no nap ) at around 2/3 like its a brand new day.Its taking a toll on me and my mental health now, not to mention our marriage cos im always worried or tired or frustrated:( Can anyone help? TIA

What do you do at 3 an when he wants to get up? Is he in a cot or in your bed? With a night waking ( anything before 6 am) I always kept the lights off and didn't talk. I always fed my wee guy if he asked to feed but then he had to go straight back to bed, no playtime, ever. I don't think the 4 pm nap is a food idea. If anything I would bring bedtime earlier like 6 pm.

Thank you! He was a good eater and sleeper both...hes eating better now, naps the same once mid afternoon 12-1:30 ish and is tired out by 7:30. Goes to bed with the bottle feed and sleeps well till about 1/2 am.I wanted to avoid the night feed habit so i would rock sing cradle and even tried the CIO ( i gave in after an hour of crying) .So one day a tried giving him another bottle when he stirred around 12, and it worked, he got up of course at 2, took him to our bed and slept through. I thought the ordeal was over! but the next day tried the exact same thing and he was up at 2:3o am fresh as a flower ready to play! Its so confusing and frustrating, my DH tells me to go to a doctor but Im not too sure they can help! I tried introducing another nap at 4, so he sleeps later by 9, thinking he would wake up later at night rather than 2, but it didnt work, he still woke up at 2 am:( Any suggestion with the nap routine? Thanks again ladies!

Snoopy, I could've written this exact post and the one about sleep a few months ago. My 21 month old still doesn't sleep every day through, and eats very little. However things are tons better than they've been for the last 8-9 months. I'm not sure if your LO always was a picky eater and poor sleeper, but mine was a refluxer, on meds for the first few months of her life and barely every slept through the night except in the early months. I know you've heard this before but it does happen when it happens. The main thing that helped us though was seeing a holistic natural medicine doctor and we found that she had a mild milk allergy. We switched her to soy and she takes chamomillia (homeopathic) for her tummy and teething troubles. The difference is dramatic. She eats more regularly, though still very little (I figure its like grown ups diff appetites for diff folks) and sleep for 8-10 hours a fair few nights. She still needs us to help her get to sleep and calls for us when she wakes but ill take that over 3-4 night wake ups, early rising and all day crankiness! We actually signed up for a sleep coach (I'm in Canada now) with gentle methods and haven't got around to using the program because stuff has been going on with us. So all of this was without any assistance otherwise. It was the sleep coach though who noticed the patterns indicating milk allergy. I don't know if this would apply to your LO but I thought I'd share so you can think about it. The second thing I'd say is consider keeping 2 naps as long as possible even if it makes days a bit longer and is a pain getting them down. Mine was a star napper till I switched at 15/16 months and since then became a nightmare most times napping half hour unless I lay with her. It changed at about 18 months. Good luck! Feel free to ask me any more questions, coz trust me I've tried EVERYTHING.

Like perkynana says, they go through phases and the best thing you can do is try not to stress about it and just keep offering a wide range of choices. Don't worry, your son will eat when he's ready. My children have all gone through phases of eating so little I wonder where on earth they get their energy from. By 14 months none of my children wanted to eat purees, they were all about the finger food. What sort of finger foods are you trying? [url=http://www.annabelkarmel.com/'>Annabel Karmel[/url'> has lots of ideas if you are stuck. Good luck!

I had the same problems at about 12 months and went to the Plunket nurse (like NCT) when i was back in NZ. She said that there will be periods of time that distraction tactics like toys, puzzles etc are the best way forward - she said that her daughter was 2 and they were going through a "negotiation phase". It does pass, DD likes to have a puzzle around when eating breakfast still but is quite happy to much through lunch and dinner on her own. She also snacks a lot more through the day - which might be worth trying. Don't worry, just try your best and give lots of variety as they go through phases - I know my DD definitely has.
