Advice please to a first timer.....

OK so I am due in December and have just started shopping for Bubs #1. I have put together a really good list of items to buy before our new arrival thanks to the lovely ladies of EW.
However, I could really do with some advice on how many of everything to buy from those of you who have been there, done that! I know ppl say that you get lots of presents etc so dont buy too much of anything but Im not sure if this will be the case for us until later in the month.

Sooooo my question please - how many of the following would you stock up on beforehand:
- onesies (how many newborn size and how many 0-3 months)
- long sleeve onesies / pj's (again how many in each size)
- day outfits
- swaddling blankets
- muslin cloths
- blankets

I know we can always run out and buy more if we need them once Bubs arrives but just to have an idea in advance would be really helpful.

Hi, I have a 20 month old and a 2 month old. With my first son I bought loads of stuff, stocked up loads on number 1 nappys, bought loads of cute little outfits, little shoes etc. With my second I was definately more sensible as when they are babies they are literally always in just vests and babygrows. My 2 month old has maybe worn 2 outfits for special occasions thats it, as they are not comfy. I would maybe buy 6-7 0-3 month baby grows and vests to start off with, as if your baby is anything like my little boy he will outgrow them in a few weeks. My boy is 2 months and is nearly ready for 6-9 month babygrows. The newborn stuff is really tiny, so I probably would only suggest to maybe buy 1 pack of babygrows and vests, I would even suggest to just buy the 0-3... They may be a little big but at least they will last. Dont go overboard with the number one nappies as they soon move on to the number 2 ones. I have loads of number 1 nappies left over.... Hope this helps :-)

My first child never wore any of the newborn size stuff, it was too small for her, but for my second I had to go and buy some because the 0-3 month stuff was too big. I suggest to stock up on 0-3 months and have a pack of pj's or similar in newborn size just in case. You can re-evaluate your stash on baby clothes closer to your due date when they give you estimates on the baby's size and weight. I also suggest to get little t-shirts (long and shortsleeved)and shorts or leggins for baby so that some air can get to the navel and make it dry faster. also before you buy clothes check if they are practical to get on and off and if they are comfortable for the baby. A lot of the little dresses for example have the buttons or zippers in the back, which is uncomfortable for a baby who is lying on its back most of the time. Check if pants and overalls come with snap buttons at the bottom, to make diaper changes easier. check if there are no decorations that could come off and be swallowe like buttons or beads... <em>edited by Lilli34 on 12/09/2012</em>

they grow super fast in the beginning, so try not to stock up too much. Also things you think are cute, can be uncomfortable, or very difficult to put on (especially for dads). So I'd personally suggest the following - - onesies (how many newborn size and how many 0-3 months) , - long sleeve onesies / pj's (again how many in each size) .... we got loads of these from friends, so 1-5 to do you the first little while. You could always buy more. I only bought one as it was cute, and I ended up with enough for him to wear a new one every day and still have some in the packaging. Mine mainly wore the onsie type PJs with legs, feet and fold over hand guards at the start. - day outfits ... We were given loads of these as well, and most still have the tags on them. He was in them for a few minutes each to send a thank you picture to the gift giver. I personally wouldn't buy any, or more than one. Although I don't know if I have a girl next time if I'll be able to help myself ;) - swaddling blankets ....... I'd buy a pack of the large muslin squares and see if your LO likes swaddling first. These can be used for so many uses, such as blanket, shade cloth, burp cloth and swaddle. Very comfy and easy to swaddle with. I much preferred them to the miracle ones I was given, and still use them now a year later. Easy to learn how to swaddle, just ask a friend or watch YouTube and you'll be a pro in no time. - muslin cloths ..... See above - blankets Probably 2 as it will be cooler in Dec or I'd say don't bother as they were yet another thing we got loads of as gifts. Make sure they are a nice non-itchy or sweaty natural fibre. I found ones made of cotton were best, like very thick Tshirt material. Also good for swaddling. The ones from baby shop were good and cheap, and washed well. Yay..l a new baby for Christmas. Well done you :)
