Well the DH came home from work this evening and was telling me one of his collegues said that him and his wife changed from the American to welcare due to hearing bad reports about delivering at American.
Have to say I have been very impressed with my antenatal care to date and the ObGyn is just a gem. Was wondering if anyone could shed light on this as DH wasn't able to give detail exactly why they had made their decision to change.

I agree about the good and bad stories from every hospital. I had my little girl a year ago at AH and it was great, the most important thing is that you are comfortable with your obgyn and everything else will fall into place. I went overdue and had to be induced and eventually had an "emergency" c-section and honestly all the staff made me feel so at ease and they were so professional. The admin side of things wasn't so great but it was all sorted out by my husband. If we have another baby in Dubai I will definately go back to American Hospital and surely it's even better now that the new ward has opened. Don't stress about someone you don't really know changing hospital and go with your own gut feeling.

You will hear good and bad stories from every hospital here, personally I know people who have had tragic disasters at AH so I would never go there. Lots of people however love it and have had good experiences. If you're happy with your doctor and service then don't bother changing.

AH is amazing and less staff issues than City since their patient turnover is less. I would advise you go and chat to the staff in labour ward - all of them are qualified midwifes, not just those doing the patient care as in other hospitals. I was in 2 minds but after chatting to and meeting the staff, couldn't wait to deliver there. They are lovely. The labour ward also has state of the art equipment, even "walking baby/contraction" monitors so you aren't confined to bed and central monitors at the nurses station so that you and baby are monitored without the midwife coming in every 5 minutes to disturb you. I loved my experience there 2 months ago.

Does AH have staff issues like city hospital? After the midwife/nurse stories coming out and the staff shortages, it's a shame nothing is being done about it.

I delivered August 7 last year my girl. Was very pleased with the service in general and the midwives, especially the lactation consultant. My OB came only in the end of the delivery, because I had no complications. The midwife was with him on the phone to discuss the progress, and if needed he would be in the hospital quickly. And like one other poster said, I was allowed to move freely. Had only lie on the bed for the pushing phase and sometimes for the CTG. Would definitely recommend AH and if baby number 2 would come, I would go want to deliver there again.

Im also planning to deliver at American, I was with welcare before and I changed to American. Had slight complications and felt much better about everything after I changed to american. different perspective!

It could be down to the fact they can't afford the fees at American Hospital or their insurance doesn't cover them and they've made up this story for some weird reason. I plan on giving birth at the American Hospital and all the reviews I've read have been great (and I spent a lot of time researching!!) The way I see it, you don't get the luxury in the UK to choose hospitals/doctors (you take what you're given in my area) so I'm just glad that I have the opportunity to deliver in a hospital like the American

Thanks Girls DH was going into a meeting with this guy but does not have direct contact with him on a daily basis but sometimes I bump into his wife when out and about so I will be on the look out. DH said he kept saying over and over again that it is reallly bad there but did not explain his rational even when asked. I've had 3 deliveries in the UK in the NHS in a teaching hospital and for two had the world and his wife present (so it seemed). TBH all i want to know is that they are competent and that my baby and I are in safe hands, I am a health professional myself (NHS) and have found the care, support and knowledge to date has been outstanding, especially as I am high risk. I think it just put the wind up my DH a wee bit LOL - it was him that asked I put it on here ;)

I've had both my kids at American hospital, both times it went well. last baby was with dr raj and she was great. i think if you ask enough you will always get good and bad reviews about every place, i would advise you to just follow your gut feeling , if you are comfortable with their care to date and have bonded with the dr, just stick with it. and as JoannaS mentioned definitely be firm with your wishes :)

I had DD a bit over a year ago in AH. Doctor was not AH doctor, but midwives were lovely and very supportive. I was able to move freely for as long as I wanted. They were very supportive during labour and aftercare was great! I do not like hospitals and left next day after delivery, but was pleased with them. At the same time I was firm about my wishes (as long as all go as it should) so they couldnt bully me ;)

Am with Dr Raj at American and have no complaints so far. My doula had 2 kids there and recommended the American to me. Also had other friends give birth there and had no complaints. I'll post my experience after I give birth. I think that different people have different expectations and coupled with the inconsistencies of care standards within and across hospitals here and also between doctors at the same hospital you are always going to get good and bad experiences posted here. As long as you feel comfortable with your doctor and the hospital then that's a good start. It's a personal choice. Blinkthink, maybe your DH could get some more info from his colleague??

well Ive been using the American hospital for over 4 years.. have had one child with them 2 years ago and im about to have another in a few months...I cant fault it...Had a fab doctor ..Dr Raj...Perhaps its due to bonding with your doctor doesnt t sound like u did catnips. Blinkthink if u are happy with your doctor and you cant fault it stick with it ull be fine there. Everyone chooses the hospital for personal reasons so just cause some woman didnt like it doesnt mean its an awful hospital.

Be carefull of American Hospital. When it came to delivery of my first one I had a nightmare. People walking in and out the rooms. Uncaring doctor whom I only saw 3 times in the 28 hours that I was in labour. They kept forcing me to lie on my back when I was in pain, even though they have charts showing all the positions a woman can take while in labour to ease the pain. My second one was delivered at Welcare and the treatment was awesome from start to finish Go see doctor Marcus Pace. He was my doctor and was so caring. I was not rushed during my visits at Welcare while at American I saw the doctor only a few minutes and was kept waiting for more than an hour every time.
