Well, to start with, I am 16 weeks pregnant and decided on registering with the Dubai Hospital. So i prepared the health card and have been assigned a local health care centre. i went in there yesterday when they registered me (they do not register before 16 weeks) and i was asked to see a Genreal Practitioner who wrote me a referral for Gynaecologist and asked me to book an appointment at the reception. And to my surprise i have been given an appointment for 3rd Oct ' 13 which is like 3 months from now. When i tried to ask her why so late and that she should give me an earlier appointment, she just snapped back saying that there are patients behind you as well.

Has any body else faced this kind of a problem getting a suitable appointment? I understand that government set ups are busy but 3 months for the first appointment is a little too much.

When I went to Latifa for my twenty-week scan, the doctor told me the gender. Maybe you just had a moody doctor that day. I have to say, though, that I already knew the gender because I had done a private scan at 14 weeks. I am going to do that with this pregnancy also. I don't want to wait until 20 weeks to find out. I noticed that they are selling a gender prediction kit in the pharmacies here. It costs 228 dirhams. Has anyone used one of these?

i had one small query. This sunday when i went for my appointment. The doctor did ultrasound for me and she checked various body parts of the baby for the development. When i asked her about the gender of the baby (i am 18 weeks right now and the gender should be clearly identifiable), she said she is not looking for gender and just the development of the baby. Does the doctor not tell the gender here in Governemnt Hospitals? Will i get to know the gender during the anomaly scan or they will also give me the same reply?

That's great Pickaboo. I had my antenatal appointments at Nad Al Sheba Clinic as I work 2 minutes up the road from there. I asked the staff at Latfia Hospital to change my allocated clinic (closest to where I live apparently but really inconvenient) to Nad al Sheba because of where I work, they were great and did it for me after a little bit of pleading and lots of nice smile from me haha I have heard good things about Dubai Hospital but have never been there. I chose Latifa because of it's reputation and as it is close to my kid's school and my work. Good luck with everything and if you need any help or advice about Government clinics/hosps give us a shout :)

i have been quite anxious till now and now all my problem is solved. i was wondering what to do and was almost at the verge of going for a private hospital but then thought that i would give a last try and went straight to Dubai Hospital on last Wednesday. I spoke to the lady at the main reception. At first she handed me the phone number of the Antenatal Clinic and asked me to call them the other day as i had reached the hospital at 3 PM and the clinic was already closed. She said they might resolve my issue. As I turned around to leave, she called me again and asked me to go to a counter which was a registration counter for the appointments and told me tell the story over there and said the lady over there might be able to help me. I took God's name and went there and without any hassle i got an appointment for Sunday :) I went there yesterday and everything went on smoothly and i had my check up and blood work also done yesterday. The doctor was very good and of a pleasing personality. I have got my next appointment exactly after one month and now i feel sure that everything would go smoothly. The best part is that the appointments would be in the evening so i would'nt have to take an off from my work as well. :)

AD, I have an insurance but it doesnt cover maternity and that's the reason i have to go through all this hassle since the time i have realized i am preggers. We were firstly having doubts which hospital to select and decided Dubai Hospital considering that all the risks would be handled efficiently. But what has happened now was completely unforeseen. I am thinking to go to a private hospital now but i wanna ask one thing. Now that i have my health card and my file is also opened in the health centre but i havent paid for the antenatal package as yet; is it possible that i go for prenatal care and delivery to a private hospital? And God forbid if any complication arises and i am referred to government hospital, will they accept me? I want to take a final decision after considering all the aspects. Hi Just wanted to tell you that my experience with Latifa and the government health clinic in Nad al Sheba has been nothing but fantastic! I am now 33 weeks with my 3rd child and have experienced City Hospital (good Dr, bad sonographer, too busy and businesslike) and Latifa and I FAR prefer Latifa. I can see my Dr at Nad al Sheba whenever I want and she sometimes doesn't even record it as part of the package. I have been able to get appointments at the hospital whenever I needed them. I work with locals so maybe I am more tolerant to some of the less helpful ladies, however, I haven't come across many. I find Latifa quieter, more serene and relaxing than any of the other big hospitals. Each to their own I guess :)

Private. My little man held on so I didn't need Latifa for an early delivery. Maybe the government hospitals are just really busy now. A friend delivered at Latifa 3 years ago and found it good. She was registered there again for her baby born 1 year ago but ended up changing to private because she found it so frustrating and there wasn't much of a price difference for the birth packages. I completely agree with you and the time span between two appointments is so much that anybody would end up in going to a private setup for all the essential consultaions.

It seems that if you are having a normal pregnancy, they let you slip through the cracks. Not just normal pregnancies unfortunately :( My last was high risk so I registered with Latifa in case of early delivery. My government OB (who was great) told me my big scan needed to be done before 30 weeks due to the complications. When trying to book I got plenty of receptionist eye rolling and huffing then an appointment a week before my due date. Thank goodness I was also going private and it was just a back up. Did you deliver in private hospital or in Latifa?

If the money is a matter you could go to Iranian Hospital. But you need to be prepared as they never refuse to see a patient, and you can always go without appointment so the place is crowded. I deliver my baby there and all was really good.

Thats alright AnonDubai. The govt hospital did give me alot of stress, so I went back home for the delivery and glad I did. I ended up having an emergency C Section due to low amniotic fluid. Latifa Hospital was not giving me a date for a scan before my due date, and the doctor appointments were few and far in between so I doubt the doctor's would have been able to foresee the amniotic fluid getting dangerously low. Fortunately our insurance refunded most of the amount. OP, don't want to scare you but I would recommend you continue seeing a private OB/GYN, specially during the last trimester. Oh no, Lilypad! I am sorry to read that. I think I was the one who recommended the government system to you. OP, what you are describing is normal. I remember that they rescheduled an appointment for me when I was in my third trimester so I went two months without seeing a doctor. It seems that if you are having a normal pregnancy, they let you slip through the cracks. Fortunately, for me, I hated going there so was happy to have minimal pregnancy intrusion but I can understand why that would annoy some women. Do you have private insurance?

It seems that if you are having a normal pregnancy, they let you slip through the cracks. I would suggest you go to a private clinic for your scans and appointments in case you have already paid the full amount for the antenatal appointments. Incase you have not, would not suggest you go there. I took the route last year, paid 5000 aed for the ante natal appointments and the appointment for my first scan was given after my due date.
