Hello, my DS is now on the Gina Ford routine. And it seems to be working very well. He does not yet sleep through the night, and still wakes up at 2:30 am and 5:30am. He is 6 weeks old and weighs 5.5kg. I was wondering how do we know how much to feed him per day? and which feeds need to be increased as he gets bigger to try to get him to sleep through the night? Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks so much, empie

I think it is at this stage that GF introduces the "Core night method" providing your LO is gaining regular, sufficient amounts (180-240g per week). The core method is basically trying other methods of getting them back to sleep after the 10:30pm feed, before giving them another feed.

thanks all! Great to hear that it has worked for so many of you. I just wanted our DS to have a routine before we go back to Europe for the summer and I return to work in September. I will definitely wait patiently for the surprise "sleep through the night". And I will have a good read through the GF book for more details about quantities for feeding:))

Hi, I have followed the GF routine since my baby was 3 months old. I found it a great help, and a brilliant success. From the gae of 4 months she has slept through the night, and I never have any problems with regards to naps and at night. She knows her own routine well now, she is now 17 months old.

Pretty much all babies wake at exactly those times at exactly that age regardless of how much you feed them. Sleep studies have shown that ability to sleep for longer is developmental regardless of amount of calories consumed throughout the day. Keep an eye on your babies weight and whether she seems hungry although FF babies have more of a tendency to overeat so try and keep a slow flow teat if you're worried about this.

Forgot to add - your baby is only 6 weeks old, PLEASE DON'T become obsessed about bub sleeping through the night, it will happen when your baby is ready and able. I stayed true to the routines and it all falls into place and your bub will just surprise you one day, mine did. ;)

Hi Empie, I follow GF Routine and have had awesome success with it. I don't have the book with me right now and I can't remember the times but have a flick through your book as she does give an idea of what your baby should be drinking per day - there is some mathematical formula to calculate it. It does depend on each baby though and its really just a guide, no 2 babies will be the same, but its a general method of working out daily amounts based on weight etc, you can even google it as many baby websites use the same calculation. She also states many times throughout the book which feeds need to be increased to meet your baby's requirements, taking into account growth spurts etc. I suggest maybe just have a read over the chapters again relating to your baby's age. Good luck!

At this age sleeping through is generally accepted to be 6-7 hours after the night time feed. Google Definition of Sleeping through the night and you'll get some handy tips.

Thanks Janesul. He has indeed gone over to formula feeding:)) Glad to hear that it is not common that a little one sleeps through the night. As ou mentioned, I am trying to feel his needs as we get along. He seems to be happy with the quantities we are giving at this point in time:)) Juts thought that there may have been a general guide based on weight etc...but of course every baby is different. Cheerio, Empie

I can't comment on this within the context of the Gina Ford routine because I've never wanted to so it but the first thing is, is your baby formula fed? If yes, then I would be increasing the amount in his bottle when he starts to finish them completely. If he's taking all his milk then he's ready for more as he grows and it's not about getting him to sleep through the night it's about his calorie needs increasing because he's getting bigger. Basically he's more hungry so needs more milk. You need to learn to read your baby; he will give you all the clues you need in terms of his calorific needs. You can find lots of guidelines about actual quantities on the net. It's a lucky mum who has a baby sleeping through the night this young. I know there are some who do, but I'm of the belief that it's luck and not a prescribed 'routine' such as Gina Ford that achieves this. Others may disagree of course ;) Good Luck.
