Has anyone considered having the genetic/ gender test done prior to implantation to check which embryos have downs sydrome?
Since doc said I am 40 and have very low AHM (which means ovarian reserve is low but quality of eggs becomes an issue too) I have been considering doing this test but wonder about the risks and also the costs.
Anyone else had this done?

I have had a test done for down syndrome at Fakih IVF while checking for the gender of our embryos. I was 39 at the time. Dr Fakih told us they would check for 5 different chromosomes: boy, girl, down syndrome, and another 2 I have never heard of. I was very happy because that meant I didn't have to go for amniocentesis, which I was terrified of (needle phobia!). They do this PGD test in their own clinic so your embryos will not fly to Beirut and back. You can double check with him. I see they are currently charging AED 10,000 over and above cost of the IVF cycle. But we had paid AED 15,000 for that. I guess they reduced their prices. Thanks so much for the update. I got an idea it was 10k in Fakihs clinic but a crazy 40k elsewhere so not sure what to believe. However when I asked Munira (I like that I get to go to Dubai mall everday instead of Sharjah..... no, seriously) she said that usually bad eggs wont fertilise and the lab technicians can usually spot the really healthy embryos. But downs sydnrome is a hard one. What if its multiples and only one is defective? A small thing with Fakih is that I am the talker and organiser in my relationship and Dh is quiet and in the IVF clinic he didnt say much, and when we walked into Fakihs office I said hi (I was in front) and then put my hand out and he ignored me and only addressed Dh. I was irritated a bit as the whole point of IVF is taking control of family planning and I am an essential part of the process and I was left to feel like a side show or appendage to my mute Dh! Only a small irk

Hi Hilsbils. Yes, lets try and meet up soon! I have met Dr Munira when she has been at Conceive but only briefly. I have been happy with Dr Pankaj but hear so much about Dr Fakih that need to see what he advises as he does seem to get results. That said I have got the BFP's with Dr Pankaj - I just need to keep them! I am a little nervous about my meeting with Dr F later as I hear he can be very rushed so am hoping I am strong enough to make sure I get all my questions answered as feeling a little fragile at the mo! Conceive dont do the test locally, they send it to Beirut and it is v expensive from what I recall (can't remember exactly how much). It's a really tough one as I agree.

Hi confusion. We should meet and chat! I saw Dr Fakih originally and we decided to go to Dr Munira at Dubai Mall medical centre who does the scans and injections from there and we travel to Conceive for the 2 procedures. Overall works out cheaper and I really like and trust her. But I would be VERY interested to see what you think of Fakih as he is meant to get results. He will likely not mince his words. I wonder if Conceive do the test? I know that Munira said that the test can also be done after conception [i'>but[/i'> what to do if the news is bad?

Hi Hilsbils We enquired about it but were told that there was a slight risk of damaging the embryo and it was not worth the money spent. However, it is something that I am definitely considering now as have had 2 chemical pregnancies and also very low amh. I am seeing Dr Fakih tomorrow for a chat as not met him yet and he does this and has actually sent me some info on it. I am happy to email it to you if you can put an email up quickly then delete? Good luck.xxx
