my ds's mouth used to smell bad when he was teething. i actually took him to a pediatric dentist thinking he had halitosis or something :D.. they told me he's just teething and its normal. Anothing thing could also be the food. The 8month is porlly trying out new foods and as his belly wont be accustomed to it yet it could cause different smell of breath.

Without wanting to worry you, a sweet smelling breath can be a symptom of diabetes. i am not sure what you mean when you say 'odd' but if you feel this is sweet, then you may want to have it checked. I am not sure if an 8 month old would have diabetes though....

also sometimes if baby has upset tummy (you might not even be aware its upset) it can smell a little sour (or like off milk?)

It is normal for a babies breath to smell slightly when teething and when he has a cold. I also find that bottle fed babies breath has a much stronger smell than breastfed babies. The breath can even change according to what formula is being used - I have an extremely sensitive sense of smell! :) Sometimes if the babies tongue is coated in white, the mother can clean it gently with a damp facecloth or piece of gauze.
