Baby not sitting up on her own yet. Any advice?

I know DD is a preemie and I am adjusting her age by her gestational age when checking for her milestones. BUT because she is a preemie, I worry about everything. DD is 11 months actual and (almost 9 adjusted). She is armly crawling quickly, sitting without support (sometimes still topples over) BUT she is not going up on all fours and nor is she sitting up on her own. Most babies go up on all fours and sit that way. She is trying to sit up from her back (does that make sense?) and not having much success. Paeds say her muscle tone is good and not to worry, but I just do.

Any advice? When did your babies start sitting up on their own?

If she's escaping the Bumbo I don't think you have much to worry about :D. It's so hard not to measure them by how their peers are doing, even for things like getting teeth - which they don't have much control over!

Thanks DC for the offer. Appreciate it but I think I am going to let her take her time. She also manages to escape from the bumbo (her cousin has one) by twisting herself to the side and pulling one leg out so she falls over. She does not mind sitting, its the sitting up she cant do. Last night, she brought her butt up when she army crawled and then managed to pull up in the crib from sitting position! I was so excited. Its almost like she does something new to reassure me when I get worried (probably saying "You are soooo paranoid mum"). I think I might give her some more time to get it all sorted (she turns one in 4 weeks) before I push the ped for a PT recommendation.

DS is nearly eight months and while he'll sit for a short while if I sit him up, he can't get up there by himself and he quickly collapses! I have a Bumbo if you'd like a loan of it.

Perhaps you could try a bumbo? I found this great for improving posture and encouraging "sitting" muscle development in my LO's.

Read less about milestones. Trust me. It will just drive you crazy. Every child is different. Some can walk at 9 months and some can barely crawl. Its up to them and when they feel ready to do so .

Thank you ladies for the reassurance. I am enjoying her immensely especially has she seems to be such a determined little baby with tons of personality at this point. I just want to help her along the way if she needs it.

My DD was not a preemie, but even she didn't sit up from lying, or crawling until 9 months old. She did an army style crawl for a long time and moved around just fine. But never sat up by herself. Then all the sudden she started sitting up, crawling and standing up all within 6 weeks. Now she's walking holding on with one hand at 1 yo. So it doesn't sound like your LO is far behind at all. Do not worry. I was told as long as they make progress, it doesn't matter if they skip steps or reach milestones a bit later. I'm sure she's developing other skills, maybe less noticeable. My DD has always had great fine motorical skills, and could do the perfect pincher grip before any of her friends. She was just not too keen on sitting and crawling. Babies are different.

My preemie didnt follow any standard milestones, She turned over and moved a little, but thats as far as she got for several months. She sat before she went on all fours which we thought was odd and then stood up before she crawled. she crawled only in the 12 month and walked after 13 months....( she was 8 weeks premature) So as you can see, her milestones were all over the place.... breathe easy, if the doctors are happy with her physical development im sure she will be fine. :) *hugs*

Do not worry. My neice was born at 37 weeks, she was very small. She is now almost 11 months and she at the almost at the same stage as your DD, the olny difference is that she is not crawling also. Each baby is different, some will start walking at 11 months and some will start later. Just to give you another example, her first teeth came out at 8 months , but I have another friend and her DS first teeth came out at 5 months. Stop worry and enjoy every small step she takes. edited by yamandw on 18/01/2011
