Hello beautiful Mumz...

I'm writing this out of big concern about my DD.. The 5 month old 's been very fussy since the last 5 days, rejecting feeds sometimes and arching her body while crying, esp at night. We doubted an ear infection, or may be teething? Her feeding habit also turned upside down, she doesnt eat well during the day and groans in her night's sleep, eats well when I offer feed and she repeats this many times till morning.
Last afternoon I noticed some blood in her poop which had turned out bit mucosy these days, it was bit stinky too. I took the sample and rushed her to her GP, who said there are 2 possibilities, i.e., an infection- bacterial or vice versa if it doesnt appear significant, and a surgical condition if the blood appears like gel.
I've given the sample for tests- Stool Routine & Stool Occult Blood, and still waiting for the results. Friends, have anyone of you gone thru/ heard of such situation? Doc has prescribed colic drops for her, and the arching and cries have become less.
Also I noticed a small wound mark (red in color, almost looks like a fresh wound) on the tip of her tongue at bedtime, which she doesnt allow me to check properly; I could see the same red mark today morning too, but it doesnt seem to affect feedings- she ate pretty well in the night and this morning too. May this be the cause of blood in the stool?
*Doc checked and told me that there's no ear infection.
And she seems to have lost weight too :( when checked last month during vaccination visit her weight was 3.4 kg, and yesterday her weight shown as 3.3 kg. She's been gaining weight properly till last month, I really dont understand what happend now.

And also friends... please tell me approx how many dirty diapers should be seen a day for a 5 months old? With my DD I find 6-7 a day.. Is that normal? And the stool is still loose. Should I make a follow up visit to her doc?

Thank you all for your kind words.. DD is doing fine now, doc said that the test report revealed a bacterial infection; Thank God it is not something serious as a surgical kind of condition. He told me to wait for few days and to check her stool everytime, unless blood with mucus is again found it should go off by itself and no medication is needed for now. Luckily I did not find anything again till now. I gave her the prescribed colic drops for only 2 days, did not continue further though the doc had written to give her for 5 days as she normally doesnt have colic pains (she had colics until around 1 & half months old and we never gave her medications for the same as per the advise from the neonatologist) And the sore on her tounge: we doubt she must have hit her face while playing. We could also find a specific area of her lower lip has become dark, we could not notice this as she didnt cry, nor showed any problem in sucking while feeding. Both the marks are gone now. Once again Thanks to you all.. :)

Just to add, I'm assuming nothing has changed in your baby's diet. If you have introduced formula or solids recently and the condition doesn't resolve you might consider allergy/intolerances as a possible cause.

Your previously healthy baby has had mucousy poo, with some blood, has been off their food and seemingly in discomfort for the last week or so. I'm not a doctor but I would say the most obvious cause of all of those things is a simple stomach bug, most probably viral ( in which case there is no need for treatment) but a stool sample ( which you have already done) will rule out anything bacterial or parasitic which might need a course of something. My son had runny stool with streaks of mucous and blood once as a baby, we sent off a stool sample but it didn't show any nasties and the paediatrician concluded it was just a virus and we carried on as usual, he was fine within a week or so.

Hi ammu07elvis, do you have a history of digestive conditions in the family? If the sore in her mouth does not clear, the weight loss continues and the blood in stool persists then I would suggest seeing a Gastroenterologist. Hope she is improving, poor darling

Hi dear hopefully nothing to worry about as same thing happened with my dd at 4 months, we took her to the doctor right away when I see a fresh blood with mucus in her diaper.doctor checked her and told me she has fissure down there and that's the reason of little blood strikes in her poo.just take her to the doctor so he can examine well.
