Breastfeeding - want to stop - Day 4 - advice on what to do?

I had a cute little baby boy on Sunday just gone. I have tried breastfeeding but having too much difficulty with flat nipples and my little boy has a tied tongue. I have decided to stop and concentrate on bottles. Please don't post reasons why I should continue. It's hard enough.

My colostrum only came in after 1.5 days. Therefore I have only been giving colostrum for 1.5 days in total.

Can I just give up cold turkey (not ween off) as it's only been 1.5 days. Or am I going to get mastidis or something else if I don't do anything?

Advice please? Hot showers and massage boobs until the milk dries up or doesn't it work like that.

Appreciate your support and advice.

Hi NinaSimone Congratulations on the birth of your little boy! Don't stress - I had the exact same issue. DD was born with tongue tie and the lactation consultant at hospital told me to keep breast feeding and expressing. I tried for four days only to be met with howls from DD who was obviously hungry and it wasn't until we introduced formula on day 5 that she actually fed well for the first time. I did it gradually. Either before or after formula, I would give DD the breast for a few moments to help empty my supply - about 5 minutes. Like someone else suggested, I then pressed in the shower to help unblock the ducts. You'll have to massage for a few days to relieve any pain or blocked ducts. By the second or third week, I stopped doing this and had no problems thereafter. I would suggest you have the tongue tie looked into. Turns out my DD's was quite pronounced and she had to be admitted as a day patient to have it released. It will also help your LO with bottle feeding as otherwise he might take in too much air and then have problems with gas. Down the track, he might also encounter speech problems. Dr Patrick at City Hospital performed the procedure. All the best.

As I am new to Dubai I don't know what meds the docs will give here, but I had my son in Kuwait... I have extreemly sensitive nipples in general and couldn't stand the breast feeding. My doc there gave me a prescription for a little pill that dried my milk up right away... I'm due in 6 weeks with my second son and am hopping I can get the same little pill here. Good luck.

Just to add - ice packs if your boobs get hot too! If all this proves too painful then try dropping one feed every 3 days and you won't have much discomfort at all 

I would recommend not stimulating your breasts anymore. If your milk comes in I'd just hand express in the shower (very minimally) and only to comfort - ie when they don't ache or are not sore stop. Also take some brufen for discomfort. Don't try to dehydrate yourself or anything to reduce your milk supply - you could get sick. Just take your time and it should settle within 3ish days. HTH
