Breastmilk - ever thought about donating?

It's something I've always wanted to do, and happily, am now supporting two babies as well as my own. If it's something you think you might be interested in doing, take a look at the facebook page for Human milk for human babies.

It's easier to do early in the piece when your milk supply is high and once you establish "the need" your body should be able to continue producing the larger amount of milk.

There are implications for donating under Sharia law and it is something of a commitment. It takes time for pumping, and space in your freezer for storing, but I was just thinking about how good I was feeling about it so I thought I'd share and put the idea out there.

From Human Milk for Human Babies UAE: We have a VERY URGENT REQUEST for milk in Dubai. Mom of 1 1/2 month old, premature twins was taken into hospital for surgery on her breasts and has no milk for her babies. She has been feeding them without supplement and would like to keep it this way. This is a SHORT TERM donation as she will resume nursing once she recovers from surgery. She would prefer a WET NURSE as the babies are so young and small but is willing to feed them from a cup if needed. If you are able to help please email [email protected] and share your contact details. These will then be sent directly to the mother who will contact you directly.

Brooke, the admin for Human milk for human babies UAE, is one of the speakers at the National Breastfeeding Week seminar organised by Breastfeeding Q&A. Anyone interested in milk donation or in other aspects of breastfeeding might like to come along. http://www.expatwoman.com/dubai/monthly_pregnancy_babies_breastfeeding_workshop_7276.aspx

Good on you too Beigey!! - milk donating is not as common in western countries, great to hear you were able to do it. re Sharia law - I think it's important anyone considering donating makes themselves comfortable with the Sharia law implications, but basically, giving milk creates a milk relationship. Whether it requires five full feeds ( Malaysian fatwa,) or any milk in any fashion, is something for the individual local religious authorities to decide. It seems there is no universal fatwa. This milk relationship is not dis-similar to a blood relation ie milk siblings cannot marry and could have a right to claim inheritance under sharia law. There are many articles on the internet, but the group I donate through strongly advises everyone satisfies themselves and consults their own religious leaders. I got a note today about a family in Dubai with a two month old looking for milk. Mum has a low supply, so they need someone to supplement, not completely provide for, a little baby. If anyone has been considering this very worthwhile idea, now's the time! There's a needy baby! I'd love to help, but am already supporting two other than my own and I think that's about all I can manage.

Well done you! It's a wonderful thing to do (and a LOT of work) I donated for a while in France because I had oversupply issues and DD was having milk baths because she refused a bottle... SO I managed for 4 months before it just got too hard. It's great they have something like that in the UAE. I was told that DD, under sharia, has a bunch of milk bro's & sisters - can you please tell me what the implications are under sharia law? I am genuinely fascinated. I was told it had to be 5 full feeds, some say from the breast some say just the milk is enough. Sorry to thread hijack!! Well done again for giving the gift of breastmilk ... your liquid gold! :)
