Cloth nappies - how many times should I wash them before they are ready for use?

I have finally bought a selection of cloth nappies to try out on DD before I decide which one to buy more of. I do recall this being discussed on here several times in the past, but now that I am searching for it, I cannot find it anywhere - how many times should I wash them before I can start using them? Do I use detergent each time or just wash them in water? I have washed them twice with a 'warm' setting - and have dried them in the sun in between, but am just wondering how many more times I should wash them for optimal absorbency? Any experiences/advice?

Has anyone tried the itti bitti tutto? this is what I'm waiting for so I'll let you know when they arrive.. cheaper to order from UK than Oz including the postage quotes, although I've got a visitor bringing them over for me. I ordered from cheeksandcherries.co.uk Thanks for the info, pentel. Have you gotten the nappies as yet? How are you liking them?

We are using cloth nappies ( baby behinds), & needed to wash them between 3-5 times before use. They have bamboo liners in them, & we haven't had any leakage issues.

that's interesting GreenQueen, I thought the snap in ones were cheaper at the Organic Cafe as well but it was the Tutto I wanted, I wanted a birth to potty nappy and couldn't find the Tutto here that website was the cheapest I found for Tuttos as they do a discount the more you buy. Cant wait for them to arrive!

Pentel - I just looked at the website and I think they are the same price (or even a little cheaper) here! I bought them from a lady called Sophia who sells 3-4 brands (she doesn't have the itti bitti tutto but she does have the d'lish) - I bought some cushie tushies for AED 100 each and on the website they are 17.50. And she does have a relatively cheaper option (called Real Nappies I think?) which I have bought but not tried yet.

It may be because I had the bamboo inners that I had to wash mine so often - who knows??? However, it doesn't matter how good the cloth nappies are you have to remember that you will still have to change them more frequently than disposables as they're not as absorbent. I would probably say wash them 4 or five times then start using them as the more you wash the better they become. You'll just have to be careful as they won't be at their most absorbent to start with. Have fun with the washing! :-)

Wow thanks Sandy - I only washed them 3 times so maybe I should run them through the wash a few more times. I did try the Itti-Bitti D'Lish one today on DD but it leaked (wee) within 2 hours so maybe I need to wash it a few more times!

GreenQueen If it's any help I bought the Tots Bots Bamboo nappy system for DS and the literature that came with them said they get more absorbent the more you wash them and recommended they be washed 10 times in total before the first use. However, I didn't use detergent and there was no need to dry in between washes so one morning I threw them all into the machine, started it on as fast wash cycle and kept restarting when the cycle was done. HTH!

Thanks Pentel - have read many of Green-ish's posts in the past and am pretty sure she recommended washing at least 3 times or more, but I have baby-brain now and cannot remember for sure :\: And those were the posts I was searching for but cannot find them anymore!! Have now washed them 3 times so hopefully that's sufficient!

I would think once should be enough, remember not to use fabric softener. If you search for a poster called Green-ish and have a look at her posts on cloth nappies, she has lots of experience on the subject of cloth!
