My little boy has had a bad cough since Monday evening. Plus fever and a leaky nose.
Went to the doc and he said there was no infection, but a lot of phlegm in the chest.
Prescribed adol for fever, butalin for cough and an antibiotic.
His fever isnt crazy high, so I have just been giving him adol when he gets v hot, which is just once a day before bedtime really.
He is on butalin 3 times a day... but i am not sure if its helping..
Havent started the antibiotic cos i cudnt see the point of it if he has no infection.
For some reason, mother;s instinct perhaps, i dont trust the doctor. Why I went to him, cos i dont know any others in this summer in doha. Besides, i have a major problem trusting doctors anyways thanks to how my little DD was treated during her illness.
Anyways, poor little DS is coughing and coughing and i can heard the heavy phelgm.
Should I start the antibiotics anyways?
Any comments? No nasty ones please, am not trying to harm my child. :)

Edited to add: Oh and fever has come down. He dint have adol today. He is a bit warm, but I am not v concerned abt the fever.

sorry I've only ever been to Al Ahli, but Dr Athiya is good, and I've found she likes to avoid prescriptions whenever possible, worth making the trip. I have also heard good things about Dr Samer, also at al ahli. ur not the lady whose kids go to star fish is it?

I like Dr Athiya at al ahli, no idea if she is on vacation Probably it a virus and he just needs rest, if he gets a secondary infection he might need the antibiotics. Try a room purifier/humidifier, keep warm etc. Coughs can stick around for ages even without infection.

coughs are always a right pain to get rid of and any medication out there just relieves the symptoms, rather than actually curing the cough. Soooo... it's about making him as comfortable as possible. If there's no infection, then don't use anti-biotics. There's an increasingly huge problem in the Western world with the over-prescription of anti-biotics and the fact that the bacteria are becoming immune to them, plus of course, they can wipe out the good bacteria in us at the same time. Try some home remedies too - honey-and-lemon in water to sip and soothe, Vicks vaporub/ menthol/ eucalyptus rubbed onto his chest to help him breathe and obviously keeping an eye on his temperature. There's a school of thought that says to leave off the medication if a child has a low fever, because it's the body's natural way to fight infection, so "a good thing"... but you would need to keep an eagle eye on him. I hope he feels better soon... I hate coughs above all things.
