Hi. Am due to have a D&C this week with doctor Shiva at Medcare as they strongly suspect ectopic pregnancy- all scans to date have been inconclusive but have identified some mass on the right side. Can anyone whose been through this advise what I should expect?
My previous miscarriage, also abt 6 weeks was natural so don't know what to expect this time. Also, what were you advised regarding waiting to ttc? Am really not keen on waiting too long. Many thanks in advance x

Hi Poppy82 I have had an ectopic pregnancy too and lost my right tube as it burst (we were camping!!! I had no idea it had burst but it had and was bleeding into a ligament so wasn't bleeding into my stomach area - very lucky). It was removed laprascopically. As other posters have said the the obgyn can save your tube they will. The ectopic was my first pregnancy but even with one tube I can assure you ... you can get pregnant! I have just had my 2nd baby boy which totals 4 pregnancies (only 2 boys, 1 ectopic, 1 miscarriage). If you really aren't sure please get a second opinion and do it fast because it can be life threatening to you. Sorry to hear you have to go through this, sing out if you need support. I had never heard of ectopic pregnancy until I had it.

as mogindubai said ectopics are not removed by D&C. i had D&C last year in april and it was as the foetus didn't developed properly so had to be removed at 8 weeks. there is no pain whatsoever in D&C. they gave me 15 min general anasthesia. procedure took 10 minutes. rested into the ward for a few hrs and back to home in 14 hrs total. no pain or bleeding apartr from loose sensation down there. So sorry to hear about yours.

My sister had an ectopic years ago, I'd get a proper scan and second opinion to confirm and don't wait. Unfortunately my sister was left too long and it burst her fallopian tube and she was in surgery for hours as they thought it was a burst appendix. She then went on for IVF as she had no luck but fell pregnant naturally years later and has a beautiful son.

Hi, a d&c would not remove an ectopic pregnancy, dilation and curettage scrapes away the lining of the uterus whereas an ectopic (meaning outside of the uterus) is a fertilized egg in the Fallopian tube. If you need surgery to remove an ectopic pregnancy (I have had this done) its normally done laparoscopically and if you're lucky they can save your tube, you can also take medication to dissolve the pregnancy but this can take time and not all Obs are happy to prescribe and give you what is basically an abortion drug. Sorry you're facing this but based on what you've written I would get a second opinion and a definitive diagnosis. Otherwise as Shelley has written d&c is quick and reasonably painless, surgery to remove an ectopic was not so easy and I found it more painful than childbirth (I conceived within 2 months of having my ectopic and tube removed) HTH somehow

Hi, I've had a D&C a few years back. I went to sleep and woke up when it was done so didn't feel a thing. They said I may experience period type cramps after, but I didn't. I did however vomit a bit when I woke up after the procedure from the drugs. My Ob/gyn at the time advised me to wait at least 1 cycle before TTC, but I've heard different people receive different advice about how quickly you can start TTC again. All the best.
