Hi All,

My friend is due in a few months, but going home (UK) to have her baby, so won't be around for a few months before or after, but I am hosting a surprise baby shower, and wanted to buy a gift that would be suitable.

Can anyone suggest something that they loved or would have loved as an expectant mother?

Thanks in Advance, P x

Hi If you are looking for a gift for the baby there is a great thread of the things that everyone thought were fantastic and those they could have done without. http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic188451-survey-baby-shopping-3-things-i-wish-i-hadnt-bought-3-things-im-glad-i-bought.aspx My only advice is if she is coming back when baby is a few months old - think a bit older for your gift and then she doesn't need to take it home with her in the interim. There is nothing wrong with thinking for the 6-12 month age group as most people only think to 6 months so that is where the outlay comes. I wouldn't bother with clothes as kids get so much already and really don't wear them that much. Stuff she wouldn't have thought about yet like weaning containers and spoons etc would be great. If they are big travellers a travel high chair/booster seat - we bought one and I now buy these as gifts a lot. We love the Munchkin one. If you are thinking of a gift for her - maybe look for a nice spa in her area at home and get a voucher for a mama massage - I loved these. Even a manicure/pedicure - we all tend to go and spruce ourselves up just before the birth as we don't know when we will be able to get back to the salon after baby arrives. Hope this helps

Hi Polly, I think it would greatly differ from mom to mom. I think with baby showers everybody is looking for super cute/thoughtful. One of my friends just bought me diapers, which, at the time, I thought was sort of dumb and unthoughtful. But she was already a mom and she knew that as a parent thats what you're buying ALLL the time. So after I actually had my baby I was really thankful for the diapers and wished I'd received more to stock up in a corner because they literally disappear! If you know what gender the baby is and whether or not he/she will have their own nursery then I'd suggest purchasing something for the nursery that you know she's missing. AND DIAPERS!!!!
