Hi Mommies,

my son is now 8.5 months, and he is exclusively on BM. i tried to give him a little bit (50ml) of Milupa formula (6-12months). and he only had 20ml maybe even less.. it smelt HORRIBLE! like it was off.
i put 2 scoops into 50 ml (instructions say 7 scoops into 210ml). do all formulas smell like that? am i putting the right amount?

i plan to stop BF at 1 year, i am worried he might like formula or can i give him normal milk?

i could do that... i am still expressing.. i just need LO to used to formula for when i wean him off at 1 year he has been exclusivley breast fed until Sunday this week where i tired to give him formula as BFC said... there's no reason why a child that's breastfed to 1 year old should ever have any formula. Neither of mine did. They just went straight to cow's milk. I work full time and for 7 and a half months i used up all my breaks to express.. i am tired.. very tired! as of today i am going to stop expressing, i will BF my now 9 month old baby In the morning and at night, but no more expressing when I am at work to make up stock for the next day.. i spoke to a midwife yesterday and she recommended I use hip organic formula, this will be the 3rd if not the 4th brand I try with my DS.. he is just not liking the taste.. if that doesn’t work then I am going to try NAN.. Where can I get hip organic formula from? I havnt seen them in the supermarket. Thanks, FM I think the Organic Food & Cafe do it - they seem to have most of the range. I have to say though, you really are a superstar for expressing so much - I could never have done what you have - both mentally and physically. People often say how good it is to have breastfed for a year, but for me, all those compliments should be going to women like you, who've shown such dedication and perseverance with your choice. Wow.

Hi Leshell, my DD (5mnths) is on S26 Gold and has been since birth. We also use the SMA ready made cartons for when we are out and about. They are fantastic and very convenient. DD has no trouble going between her S26gold and the SMA cartons. I ran it by my paed and both brands are believed to be very similar, DD certainly doesn't show any preference or any fuss going between the 2. HTH

Anyone tried SMA? i have DD on Nan HA and find her poo's really smelly, green and runny. Dr says she is ok, sent everything off to be tested and came back normal however just thinking it might not be right for her. She is 3.5months and thinking about making the switch. Is the Wyeth progress the s26 one? I am confused, and has anyone used SMA, i like the idea of it as they have some ready made packs which would be handy when travelling.

i changed the formula and bought the Stage 2 of S26 ( has a different name cant remember it) and its vanilla flavoured but still smells HORRIBLE... smells off!!! i put one scoop into 60ml as per the instructions at the back.. i have to force my LO to drink 30ml.. i literally have to hold his arms and head and force the bottle! any other nicer options???

Stage 2 formulas are actually just a marketing ploy, and are not strictly necessary as an alternative to stage 1. You can use stage 1 formula past 6 months, if you choose. Edited as I just re-read your post and I don't think this answers your question, sorry. Follow-on milks are another name for stage 2 or stage 3 milks. As Janesul says, cow's milk is typically recommended rather than formula if a substitute for or supplement to breastmilk is needed after 12 months. Milk is usually no longer the "main" part of a child's diet at this age and really is just a convenient source of protein, calcium and so on. Sometimes toddlers will refuse to drink cows' milk once weaned, and it's actually not really a big deal as long as they are consuming sufficient quantities of other dairy products (cheese, yoghurt and the like) and/or other sources of calcium, protein and vitamins. <em>edited by BFC on 10/03/2011</em>

Well that's up to you really. I give my 15 month old follow on formula but he likes it. I wouldn't be fighting with a baby to drink it if he'll happily drink cows milk. do your research but my understanding is that cows milk is sufficient after 12 months.

i was told (by random people) to stay away from S26, causes bad constipation apparently...but every baby is different righ! Yep, every baby is different. My DD is far from constipated and we've been using this for 21 weeks now! :D

I faced exactly the same issue when i was using NAN 1 HA most formula's smell horrible & therefore it is makes the weaning even more difficult, i then tried Progress Gold with vanilla flavor & DS now hooked on to it, the smells good & tastes good as well!!
