Its been going on for quite some time now. He just nibbles on a few things but doesnt really eat proper meals. He is underweight for his age too. He is healthy though. Any advice? Doctor said there is no medicine that can fix this but Im tired of people commenting on how skinny my son is. Help!!! :(

Appletiser, if it's the weight you're worried about try progress gold stage 3, my son wouldn't eat a thing but this stuff bulked him up so much and he loved it! It has all the vits and nutrients too which I found reassuring. People were always surprised how big he was considereing he ate nothing! edited by jwal on 27/04/2011 Thanks Jwal, but he was breastfed and hates the taste of formula. Pediasure is the only thing he will drink that comes out of a tin. I might buy a small tin and try though.... Yeah, all 3 of mine were breastfed, I didn't give them the formula until they were a year so you should definitely try it, I agree with what the other poster says about teething too though, that really makes such a difference, good luck!

Hi Appletiser, My son was the same until his last molars came through, a month ago. He's been like that ever since he started teething at 10 months and now he's 27 months. I can really sympathize. I was super stressed out and people's comments did not help either. I even had to cancel vacation last summer because I hated to hear what everyone had to say about his weight. I keep telling myself his weight doesn't really matter as long as he's healthy, which he is. Coincidentally, he was put off milk due to constipation for two weeks and that brought all the change. Well, that and his teeth. Milk was filling him up he had no room for food. Now he begs for food if I delay giving it and even though the portions are still small, he is improving everyday. So my advice to you is please wait and see until all his teeth are out and try to substitute milk for other calcium rich foods like I did. I noticed pediasure filled him up even more as it was thicker. Try to ignore what people say, as hard as it is. He will get better.

Thanks ladies for all the advices. Just felt so dreadful today when I heard two checkout girls at the supermarket gossiping about how skinny my son was! :( I give him a bottle of pediasure every day hoping to increase his calories. He never finishes it. He likes snacking on fruits and veggies but that has no calories. Im already also giving vitamin supplements but hes apetite is still poor. He is in the 15 percentile of the weight chart now. I think I will try the deworming medicine next. Something needs to happen....

I feel your pain...my DS is difficult when it comes to food himself. Everyone is always so quick to say, he'll eat when he is hungry, blah blah blah...it dosen't stop you from worrying though and stressing. My LO will be 5 in Nov, he does not snack, he does not eat junk food...seriously, the easter bunny left a bunch of eggs and he has not touched one. Occasionally he will ask for a small bowl of mini marshmallows or a chocolate chip cookie but those times aren't many. He has spurts where he will only eat certain things. He attends school 3 days a week and won't even take a sip of water while there. I make sure he eats a good breakfast before school, usually an adult sized bowl of cherrios and a banana. I get him at 1pm and he immediately drinks a thermos of orange and carrot juice that is 2/3 watered by me. I make a piece of french toast for him for lunch usually with one egg and a large piece of bread (I add a tsp of both oat bran and milled flaxseed to the egg mixture with a little milk) and make sure the bread soaks all the mixture. He eats that with maple syrup. Dinner time he will usually have a mini pizza made with a pita, sauce, cheese and a slice of turkey bacon. That is it, a drink or two throughout the afternoon/evening but not another bite. I have tried everything. He is never hungry it seems(I'm not sure where he gets that either) I make sure he has multivitamin everyday and hope for the best.

My ds never ate as a toddler so I used to give him formula still because I was so worried that he wasn't getting any vitamins and nutrients, the one aged 1-3 years! He was never under weight because of this. He would only eat bread and fruit! Then all of a sudden one day he started to eat, now he eats normal meals with us!

I think it is a rare mother who can honestly say their toddler is a great eater. Just make sure what he is offered is healthy, good high protein foods, plenty of fruit and veggies and dairy. I know its easier to give in and let him have a happy meal, but long term this is setting yourself up for problems. Dont make mealtime become a battlefield.

I would try a few things, cutting out all snacks and only allowing him to have proper meals at regular times, hence encouraging him to eat more in one sitting. Try some new colourful, exciting recipes. Ones that are visually appealing. Also you can try to get him to help prepare the meals/healthy snacks so he is learning about food and more excited about eating? Is he just eating a small amount at each meal or just snacks the whole day. They are trying little souls sometimes arent they. HTH
