Morning Ladies,

I'm a bit confused as to how much my 5 week old baby should be sleeping during the day, as he really struggles to settle himself in the evening after his 6pm feed and bedtime routine.

He doesn't sleep an awful lot during the day, probably for no more than 1 hour at a time and maybe only a couple of those in total. Is this enough? He's a very alert baby, so doesn't seem to want or need any more sleep. However, this morning he has yawned a few times and each time I took it as a cue for sleep, so laid him down for what I thought was going to be a nap ... he didn't nap, just cried and wrestled around like he was bored.

Sometimes he is wide awake after his 2am feed, and I did read somewhere about not napping enough during the day will make them wake more at night. Not sure I understand that though!

Just very tired today and trying to filter through the mass of information about sleep, so any advice would be much appreciated :)

TIA

Don't feel like there's something wrong Jupiter, all babies are different and even the same baby will go through different phases even every few weeks. DD used to hardly sleep at all during the day, we were trying and trying, she would sleep for 15-20 mins that was it. That lasted from let's say 2 weeks to about 4 months. She then started taking 2 and sometimes even 3 good naps a day (1-2 hours each). She is now 15 months and she just wants to play and walk and run every waking moment but she still takes a good 1,5-2hr nap in the morning. Depending on how tired she is she has been known to have 3hr "naps" too:-) Unless there is something else that concerns you just keep giving opportunities to sleep and if it doesn't happen now it'll happen later...

Thanks for your reply mssassy. I do try to dreamfeed, but he sometimes wakes despite my best efforts. I will persevere though! :)

Hi Jupiter, a five week old normally sleeps for 16-17 hours in total. Most of the babies sleep more during day and less during night. But I know babies who hardly sleep. All babies are different. I would'nt worry as long as the baby is happy, alert and taking feeds properly. I ll just share my experience. I struggled much with my DD to settle her to sleep through the night. She used to sleep a lot during day time unlike your LO. Now she is a happy 5 month old who sleeps through the night. Do you do dream feeding? If not start it from today. Trust me it helps a lot. If he wakes up at 2am or such times do not switch on the light and do not play with him. Try to get him back to sleep by rocking, singing or whatever. This way you will give him a message that its sleeptime at night. My cousins baby used to sleep for very less hours . He is three and very happy and smart. However if you are concerned ask his Doc.
