I find that I am having to use Infant Gaviscon in almost every feed for DD (the max is 6 feeds per day and we're on 5 feeds per day). I am also finding that it is difficult for DD to keep down the feeds without the Gaviscon. Has anyone else experienced this? Do you tend to use the max dose per day or just use it once or twice per day?

Thank you Plumie and Mrs. L, DD is trying to learn to BF (at least I'm still hoping, but the reflux isn't making it any easier) but for now is bottle fed EBM so I mix the Gaviscon with the EBM in her bottle, and it's been keeping the feeds down. She's also on Zantac and Motilium but so far what appears to work best is the infant Gaviscon. I am hoping however that the meds kick in as she still arches and screams in pain whilst feeding. I've also noticed that the Gaviscon makes DD very constipated although she's on EBM exclusively hence why I was asking about the number of times to use it. DD's paed prefers we limit it to maximum five times per day as a result, but the problem is that when we don't use it, DD is in a lot more pain :( Thank you again for the advice. Also @plumie, I've been just talking to a mum who'd used Gaviscon with her infant and she says she used to give it in the middle of the feed and it worked just fine. Maybe that's an option?

I am wondering is Cecile advised Plumie to give it after the feed b/c she is breast feeding? Thats what I had to do after DD BF. edited by Mrs Laughan on 14/02/2011 Yes - you are right MrsL, DD is breastfed! In saying that, I just gave her 1ml, 15 minutes after her feed, and she threw up most of her feed again :( She hates the taste, gags and boom - it's all over the place! **SIGH**

Hi Lemondrops, You should be giving it every feed, up to the recommended dose. If you notice that your LO is keeping down her feeds with it, but when you don't give it she is not, then it is doing it's job, which is great. But I know with the supply issues here using 5 sachets a day can be a little nerve wracking. Because it works by creating a float on top of the food, which is then digested, they need it to keep the food down. With other reflux meds they reduce the acid production, completely different way of working, and if you can manage it with just Gaviscon, I think that is far better. You also want to prevent the food coming up as it burns their throat....DD had silent reflux, which the ped wouldn't believe, b/c of the burning she developed an aversion to eating......something you definately want to avoid. I am wondering is Cecile advised Plumie to give it after the feed b/c she is breast feeding? Thats what I had to do after DD BF. edited by Mrs Laughan on 14/02/2011

My second son had silent reflux in the Uk, we were given powdered Gaviscon (don't know if its the same here) and I was advised to mix it with his every bottle. He was fine after that, he had it until he was fully weened.

thanks How often are you using it a day? We have only started using it today! Will be giving it to DD after every feed, so that will be 5 times a day.

LD - just came back from seeing Cecile and she advises best to give it to her in between feeds! DD seems to be suffering from silent reflux, so we will be giving her 2ml after every feed. The Gaviscon acts as a barrier and "seals" in the feed. HTH
