Thanks everyone! Now I have a better idea of what to expect this summer. Today she's napped for 45 minutes....total. I am trying to not be a nap fanatic. She actually slept in today, till 5:08! I didn't realize how exhausting it would be to look after her in another place (we're in an apartment rental) as opposed to home!
Klee I feel your worry, I really do! I am recently back from Australia and this time the jet lag has really knocked my 7 month DD around. The last time we traveled she handled it all so well, not this time.
My only bit of advice is whenever you arrive in a destination during the day, take them out into the sunshine. Arriving in Oz I did this and DD was amazing, and when we arrived back in Dubai I took her in the morning sunshine, thinking that was enough, well it wasn't. So today, a few days later I have taken her back out into the sunshine a few times throughout the day (quickly and carefully due to the heat) and its done her wonders this afternoon. My first afternoon without the grizzles even though she was super tired. Traveling really takes it out of them, especially longggggg haul so its important to try and stick with your routine when you arrive while also being a little more understanding with them at the same time. Its not easy, I am finding this out the hard way! But hopefully little by little I will get my happy smiley baby back who sleeps 12hrs uninterrupted every night. I miss that baby!!! LOL
Hang in there - and I will also try and take my own advice too :D
I just switch to whatever time it is in the country we're in. The time difference between the UK and here is quite good in that it's the space between meals - so dinner time (17h) for us become lunchtime (13h) in the UK, so their bodies are still telling them they're hungry at an appropriate time, iyswim. You need to be a bit flexible, of course, and be ready for a few snacks or tweak the meal on the earlier side of normal, but apart from that, it's no different.
Let her nap when she needs to - you'll have to play it by ear a bit, but you'll find she keeps to more or less the same routine. The day of travel will be all over the place though - guaranteed!
As I said, I have far more trouble with the sun rising and setting because they're used to the 12h (approx) of sunshine here, day in, day out and aren't used to it still being "daytime" at 22h!
HAK - Do you mean you just stick to Dubai times for feeding or do you switch them straight into UK time and go with that? I'm going to UK in Oct which will be 4 hours behind and my DD will be 4 months old. We have day flight on way out and night flight back (am so not looking forward to it!) I am clueless as to what will happen to her routine whilst in UK! Any suggestions??
I just pretend jetlag doesn't exist and stick to their routine in terms of meal-times. I've always been easy as to when they nap during the day and how long for, but mealtimes and bedtime are fixed in stone!
They seem to take anything from a couple of days to 10 days to really settle back in and "normalise", but predictable routine seems to be the key.
I just know that both of them are going to be up at 5h when we're back in the UK (because it's light) and then oh the saga getting them to bed when it's still light! lol!
Hi Mamas,
We are currently on holiday with our nearly 1 y.o; in Europe so we are 2 hrs back from Dubai. This is our first trip, and I have some questions about her sleep and hope you might have some tips.
At home she goes 6:30-6am, no wake ups, takes 2 naps of 1 hr. each. She sleeps in her crib, she doesn't know what to do the few times I tried to bring her into bed with us.
Here, no matter what time I put her down, she wakes at 5 am. Have tried 6, 6:30, 7 & 8. Her naps are 30-40 min. each. We are keeping to her normal wake times of 3-3.5 hours; I know that might be shifting because she's turning 1.
Our flight was a day flight, and she only took one nap of 35 min.
She is a really good sleeper, but I'm going to the USA with her in July and am a bit nervous. She's clearly tired. I've tried nursing her and putting her back down (both at 5 am and at short naps), she's quiet for 10 min then wants up.
What have you Mamas experienced with a little toddler? Anything make it better? It's not horrible, I know, just hate to see those dark circles growing under her eyes. TIA!
