im loosely follow many solid schools of thought - but im ashamed to say i only realised now many people actually measure the amount they give in solids :s feel terrible. Do you measure in grams? assume before you freeze?

Food before one is just for fun... Feeding baby in the beginning is just about him learning how to eat, feeling different textures, tastes etc... Just let him go for it & don't worry too much, but continue with all your milk feeds for the moment... As that is still where all his nutrition comes from. I recommend the book 'Baby Led Weaning' by Gil Rapley, available at Dubai Mall Kinokuniya... HTH & Happy Weaning!

We buy packets of prunes (pref with no stones!) and I boil them up in a small amount of water. After about 10 minutes the prunes are pretty much puréed. It is quite tasty and i give the prune purée with oats in the morning quite often to ensure we don't get into the same predicament again- My DD was constipated once because she refused water from her milk bottles so I gave prune purée and things were moving within hours! Now she is drinking a lot more water thankfully from sippy cups and bottles with straws now, even from bottles with teats that are not the same a the milk ones. edited by sparkly on 06/03/2013

phew - thanks ladies - such a comfort! so yesterday i fed him zucchini and apricot puree (not mixed lol!) and ive also given him water which ive boiled with prunes (so effectively like a prune juice) and nothing!! the night before he cried while he poo'ed the poor little guy :( its so heartbreaking to see...the doctor says its a combination of ive just started formula almost completely now and the introduction of solids. Ive stopped all babyrice/porridge etc. And i stopped apple as i very stupidly had thought it would help! apparently apple juice is very good too but im resisting for the time being as i dont want to throw too many things at him at once. Anyone tried prune puree? i cant find any fresh ones at the moment though :(

Lol absolutely not, you are feeding a person not a robot! Constipation is usually caused by starchy foods like rice cereal, carrot, potato etc. most fruits are non constipating but greenish banana can be, make sure it is very ripe with brown spots and it will be easier for your baby to digest, babies don't digest starch we'll especially if formula fed, if breastfed then breastfeeding right before the meal will help provide digestive enzymes. The pectin in apples is also constipating. Peach, plum, apricot and nectarine gave the opposite effect. If you give your baby their milk feed shortly before offering solids then you will ensure they don't displace milk with solids which is the main worry, then it's safe to let them eat on demand.

i give my ds 1) apricot and pear 2) prune and apple if he is constipated. works as a wonder for me too. and don't worry people will look down their nose and will pick up on your parenting. you just do what you wants. i always follow " mama knows what's good " :) edited by angel joy on 05/03/2013

I have never weighed any of ds food. He's nearly 11 mths now. I let him guide me as to how much he will eat.

Unless baby has serious weight gain concerns, I don't see a need to measure. Give baby as much as baby wants!
