Our insurance policy covers maternity with a 20% co-insurance or 10% co-insurance for approved packages. We are looking for maternity packages but I´m not a doctor so obviously I don´t know the differences. So far I have checked Medcare and American Hospital. both seem pretty similar.... My worry is, are there a lot of things that are not going to be covered in the packages so we will end up with a massive bill? What is your experience with hospital packages?
It is so complicated to be pregnant for the first time and try to understand all these things!
I would very much appreciate you let me know your experiences.
Thanks!

Thanks very much for the detail of the information and point of view. I have also had to pay in advance and then claim the money back if I have a package they will give me back 90%, if it is just appointments they will give me back 20%, that is why I was thinking in buying a package. But your experience of feeling an "overmedicalised" in your second pregnancy it is a very good point. Unbelievable that City and AH don´t cover the major scans even buying a package!

Medcare - the packages vary between the doctors. But appts and the major scans are covered in most of the packages. I paid and claimed on my insurance so not sure about direct billing there. I agree with JoannaS - the admin side is appalling - left arm doesn't know what the right arm is doing. American Hospital - the packages vary between doctors and don't always include the major scans, so take care to ensure that you know what is included in the package as you may find yourself paying extra for the 12 week and 20 week scans. Same with the City Hospital - the 12 and 20 week scans weren't included in the package and I did the 12 week scan and 20 week scan at the Fetal Medicine Centre as I couldn't get an appt with the sonographer at City! Again, with American and City I paid and claimed so not sure about direct billing. In terms of admin, City and American were absolutely fine and had no problems. Just a thought - I don't know how your insurance works but do you have to sign up for the packages? I did at Medcare for DS, but for DD I started off at City and luckily hadn't signed up for ante natal package as the ob/gyn I was seeing left the City and I couldn't get an appt with another doctor there (getting appts seems to be a problem at City as they seem to have taken on more patients than they can handle). I switched to American and didn't bother with a package. To be honest this was better as with DS, I felt I was at the hospital too much and the pregnancy felt 'overmedicalised' with too many unnecessary scans and appts. This suits some people I know but I was happier just making an appt at American as and when I needed. Out of the three hospitals, American was the most professional and stress free and the admin a breeze. I had a c-section there and the care was fab. and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. edited by waterbaby on 09/08/2011

Thanks Joanna. Ladies, please, tell me more about your packages, so far I am trying to decide among American Hospital, City Hospital and Medcare, both for pregnancy and childbirth. Can you please share your experiences? Thanks very much in advance.

HI Nimonemo, I learnt that Medcare packages are only for those with no insurance alternatively they suggested I will 'pay and claim'. I found admin side at Medcare totally unprofessional. Not sure about packages with AH, but defenitely worth checking. I delivered DD in AH last year (with a doctor from outside AH) and it was good. I am currently pregnant with number 2 and have arrangements with my ob-gyn that I see here every two months and in between (as long as all is ok) I am seeing a midwife. Not sure every ob-gyn is as flexible and understanding.
