Hello Ladies,
I have an insurance question for you.
I just spoke with my insurance AETNA asking them about the newborn insurance and they told me that the baby can be insured only after she has got a birth certificate and a passport.
This can take up to 3 months to get issued so I'm really concerned of sth going wrong (hopefully not!!) and the baby not having any insurance.
It seems so wrong.
Has anyone checked with their insurance about that??

Thank you all so much for your replies. I agree with you - DivineBeet - that AETNA reps are not up to speed. he HR rep fro the company told us that the baby is covered once we provide the birth certificate. Just want to doudle check with that as well, to be on the safe side. I'll make sure to let you know of their reply.

NP - Just wanted to add an update. I decided to check what the process is to register a new baby for her own plan, so I can be prepared for whats to come - Instead of reaching to Aetna directly, I contacted the HR rep who deals with insurance at my husband's job, since my plan is through his employer. I find that at Aetna the customer service reps are not always up to speed on their own info. The HR rep told me that a copy of the birth certificate is enough to open the new plan for the baby (after the initial 30 days, during which she will be covered under my plan). She said that eventually we need to submit passport copy and visa copy for the baby, but it will not be necessary to open the additional policy. Again, this is based on my particular plan/policy and yours might be different, but I just wanted to let you know so you might not necessarily need a passport to open a new plan.

I think it depends on your specific insurance plan. I too have AETNA and per my benefits, my baby will be covered under my policy for the first 30 days after birth, including routine checks, vaccinations, blood tests, NICU, etc, without any additional documentation. After the 30 days, I will need to apply for a separate policy. When you do call back, or if you have your member handbook, check about Maternity & Newborn benefits (or sometimes called "Mother and Baby Module" by AETNA), as the customer service rep might only give you information about NEW policy for baby instead of looking at your existing benefits just after birth, when the baby is still possibly under your policy. Good luck!

Hi NP I'm looking for the same thing. I'm also with AETNA and they only cover the baby while the baby is in the room with you for I think the first 48hrs after that you can add baby on to your policy but you have to have baby's birth cert and passport. If anything goes wrong with baby and they have to go into NICU then baby is not covered and it becomes a pre existing condition so again you're not covered. I've asked a bunch of companies and they all seem to have the same policy.

Thanks for your reply. I'll speak to them again tomorrow for more details, as the person in charge was not in the office, so I hope they confirm to me what you are saying.

I would double check, but I'm sure the baby is covered by your insurance until you get the passport etc. edited by Geordie expat on 01/07/2014
