I've now had two. One with my pregnancy last year and one with this year's. THe idea is the most frightening thing. You go in, they put the ultrasound on your stomach and the doctor has a quick look to gauge where the baby is lying and how best to access the direct line to the placenta. The needle is long and thin. In my mind i had remembered a straw but it seemed much thinner this time. You then lie still and the doc puts the needle in. I closed my eyes and just counted. You feel the needle at the 'harvest' site. It's a wierd scratching sensation right inside you but it doesn't hurt but it is a little uncomfortable. The first time the doc was in and out in 22 seconds the second 40 secs. Afterwards, you go and lie down for a couple of hours. Take a book, your ipod or the paper. Dh and i just chatted but the time does drag as you are so worried. After 1.5 to 2 hours they ask you to nip to the loo. If you have been incredibly, devastatingly unlucky that is when you would know that there was a spontaneous miscarriage. This really is very unlikely but it was i feared the most. Afterwards, you go home and put your feet up. Some women feel fine by the next day and go back to work etc or it takes others a few days. The initial results come through in 3 days (not including w/e's). The rest 10 days or so later. The chances of the results changing from the prelimimary one that you get are 0.1%.
