Hi,
I just had my first scan today - due in October! Thought I was 8 wks but turns out I'm only 6weeks 5 days, a little earlier than I thought! I was asked if I wanted to do the NT Scan for the Down Syndrome screening and I opted to do it and made my booking. Now that I read about it and how so many people get false positives it's frightening - I'm just wondering have many other ladies done it here in Dubai and how they found it? My appointment is with the Fetal Medicine Centre beside Mediclinic. Many thanks in advance.

Together is fine. I had mine done in the same visit from Fetal Medical centre.

I think that should be fine. Both times I had mine done I happened to be back in nz, and the procedure there is bloods first and then scan, and from memory bloods were best done at around 11 weeks and scan at 12, but there is a window of opportunity so 11 and 1/2 weeks is probably spot on.

I had mine done at the same time too. The date you booked is fine. It's more important that you don't cross a certain week (14?) because after that date they can't do the measurement since the nuchal fold "closes". It will all be fine, all the best with your pregnancy! :-)

Thank you both very much - that's very informative and puts my mind at east a bit better!. You mention doing the triple test, thanks for this, I definitely will - just one question, you say the blood test is done at 10/11 weeks and the scan around 12ish weeks - does that mean you have to go in twice? When I rang they said it's all done together, blood test and scan and it takes an hour and a half, within this time you get the results? At the date I've booked I'll be 11 weeks 3 days.

You don't get a "false positive" with this test, the NT is not a test that tells you if your baby has Downs Syndrome or the other syndromes they test for, and you would never ever make a decision to terminate a pregnancy based on this test. This test simply calculates your risk factor based on your age, your baby's physical appearance (nasal bone and nuchal fold) and blood results and from that point you can better decide whether you want to do a conclusive test (amnio). So for example you might get a result which says you have a 99.999% chance of not having a disorder and confidently not bother with an amnio, or you might get a result that says you have a 95% chance of not having a disorder, and if it was the 95%, you might decide to continue and do an amnio. An amnio is 100% accurate, you can not get a false positive. Make sure to get the TRIPLE test done, this COMBINES the results of a blood test (taken at around 10/11 weeks) with the NT test (done via ultrasound at 12ish weeks). The blood test and the scan can be used independently to calculate risk factor, but when combined within a calculation are far more accurate. The NT isn't just for Down's syndrome, there are a few syndromes they calculate for and also they check the growth of the major organs at the same time.
