In Dubai is it normal to have the baby with you the whole time after you have given birth?

Can you go home ASAP if that is what you want?

Ask that baby is to stay with you at all times and is not to be taken from the room without being accompanied by yourself. Have it written in their chart and put a note on their cot. When I had my last baby here in 2010 I had explained my wishes and it was in his chart. Despite that, I woke up one night to find a nurse quietly taking my son out. She said that he needed a check up and she didn't want to wake me. I hit the roof and put a large note on the side of his cot. It seemed to work although they may have thought I was nuts!

At city my LO was with me the whole time. When he went to have blood taken for his newborn tests, we both went with him and held him through the whole process. I was asked if I'd like him to be taken to the nursery so I could get some sleep after he was born. However once I made it clear I wanted him left with me, they didn't ask again. You can discharge yourself when ever you like. They will drag their heels (especially as someone else mentioned, in finding your paediatrician to sign out our baby) however if you make it clear you are leaving whether its done or not, they'll find someone pretty fast. Before I gave birth in Dubai I was obsessed with having my baby with my all the time. Once in American Hospital the baby was with me all the time, they only took him away to see the pediatrician a couple of times. That was less than 30 minutes. They give you a cot and the baby can be with you all the time. Just tell that to the nurses.

With my number 2 baby. We turned up to hospital at midnight, he was born at 2am. DH watched him while I had a shower. Then we all went home at 10am. Would this be okay here in Dubai? I definitely do not ever want my baby taken to a well baby nursery. I would worry that they would feed formula or give some immunisations or take tests. none of which I would permit. I would also not let anyone else bathe my newborn.

both times my babies where rooming in with me, with the possibility to have them watched by the nurses in a little room where they also bathe and examine the newborns. this way I could catch a few hours of sleep until baby was hungry again, but normally it is intended for baby to stay with you most of the time. the first time I went home after 24 hours and the second time i stayed 3 days and would do so again as I appreciated very much to be cooked for and taken care of in the hospital and wasn't in a rush to get back home to the dirty dishes and having no one to watch the baby while I could have a little nap.... But I think it is possible to get discharged whenever you want if there are no complications

It's your baby, if you don't want them to leave your sight then they shouldn't. If you want to place them in the nursery overnight or whilst you take a shower then the private hospitals will allow you to. The OB will discharge you as soon as you wish so long as there were no problems with the delivery, it's the Paediatricians that take their own sweet time to discharge the baby that holds you up.

I went to city and my baby didn't leave me, despite the MW obsession with trying to take her off for a bath. I insisted on discharging myself 24 hours after...can't understand why anyone would want to stay unless they had to...good luck!! <em>edited by samie10 on 22/10/2012</em>

This is normal at the government hospital. I don't think it is normal in private hospitals. I had a very straightforward delivery and I was allowed to leave after 24 hours at the government hospital. At the private hospital, I was forced to stay two nights even though I begged to leave. I think that has to do with insurance billing, though. I really loved how my son never left my sight at the government hospital.
