Hi! I am currently 4 months pregnant and breastfeeding a 15 month old. For a while now, breastfeeding has been hurting me, although it never hurt me before. I was thinking it was because of my son's teeth but now I am wondering if it could be hurting because I have no milk left. One thing I have noticed is that my son never sucks for more than a minute or two and sometimes less than a minute during the night. Could he be pulling off so quickly because there is no milk hence no reason to suck?

Could it be that I am no longer producing milk and I don't even know it? Does anyone have any experience with this issue?

Thank you for your response, Kiwispiers. I feel bad now because my son is only 15 months old and I breastfed my daughter until she was almost 3. He is drinking a lot of milk and laban with a straw but I still feel bad... first rule of parenting, you will feel perpetual guilt about any decision you ever make for the rest of your life ;) seriously though, 15 months is awesome, and the second (and third) children will never get the same ride as number one did. I feel constant guilt about how much more time I had with my son than my daughter, he had 2 solid years of my undivided attention and even now she barely gets a look in, but then he didn't have the benefits of an older sibling, you can't be equal in all things. At 15 months breastmilk totally has nutritional value (despite some weirdo doctors in the UAE apparently saying otherwise), but he is old enough that he can get that nutrition from elsewhere if need be, nature would not allow you to get pregnant again if that wasn't the case and being pregnant is such an easy (and natural) way to finish the weaning process, I don't plan on any more babies so my daughter will probably breastfeed until she's 25 as I have no idea how to stop any other way. Hope your nipples enjoy a nice vacation for a few months before baby number three claims them for the next few years!

I experienced exactly the same thing four months into my second pregnancy, breastfeeding become painful although I did not have any nipple tenderness outside of when I was feeding. My son had always been a snacker anyway but it did become apparent that he really wasn't getting anything and I'm not sure if the nipple discomfort was perhaps due to him trying really hard to get something out, it did seem that he was forgetting how to latch. I was quite happy to wean as he was 22 months and eating a food range of other foods so the timing was pretty much right and the fact that it was uncomfortable motivated me to encourage him to wean. I did the " don't offer don't refuse" as well as using a bit of distraction and diversion, and wore lots of high neck tops. Most of my friends who have nursed during pregnancy stopped at around the 4 month mark as their supply dwindled, I think it's common.

Thank you both for your responses. I am sure that I don't have sore nipples because they don't hurt at any other time, only whilst feeding. I don't have a pump and I have never squeezed my breasts so I have no idea if I still have milk. There is definitely no let-down, but that is probably normal since I have been breastfeeding for so long. I don't mind if my son self-weans. I guess that I will just have to wait and see. He certainly doesn't seem to be taking much milk from me...

Hiya AnonDubai, Congrats on ur pregnancy too...ur doing a great job by breastfeeding at the same time too. Meagle is right, ur supply could have easily dropped due to ur hormones...have u tried to squeeze some out ur self either by hand or a pump to check ur supply? I stopped breastfeeding my daughter at 13months as soon as i found out i was pregnant with baby number too...i found she wasn't drinking for long either but i think that was because she was full of the food she eats now. This is only because when i checked my supply it was normal, even though i dropped to one feed by that time....i also wanted to stop because i didn't want her to get too attached before baby number two comes along....to my surprise she wasnt attached atall...i just stopped and she never asked for it...come to think about it, maybe she was self weaning too.

Congrats on both the pregnancy and continuing to nurse your toddler. I'd highly recommend getting yourself a copy of the book Adventures in Tandem Nursing by Hilary Flower. It's a great read about nursing during pregnancy and after the birth of the second if you so choose. The pain you're feeling is most likely due to the pregnancy hormones not your supply having dropped. Do you remember sore nipples during the early months of your first pregnancy? Really, really common pregnancy symptom. It is also very common for your supply to drop drastically or dry up completely while pregnant. That shouldn't be painful, though. He probably is nursing less due to this change. He may decide to self wean due to the drop in supply or he may continue to "dry nurse." Remember, they get a lot of emotional benefits in addition to the milk, so even if your supply drops completely he may still want the closeness and comfort. I planned to continue nursing my 1st throughout my pregnancy with my 2nd only to have my DS self wean at about 17 months when I was nearing the end of my 1st trimester.
