I am just wondering how much milk you are expressing each time and how often you are doing it? I am feeding bottled breast milk (DD is accepting this much better than the breast) and giving 1 to 2 top up feeds daily with formula and I want to know if I am producing the normal amounts. TIA

Topping up with formula is fine, you will find though that if you do top up, there is a high chance you will start to produce less and less milk yourself. The only way to make enough milk for the baby without formula is to breastfeed or pump often and long enough and pump for a little longer to stimulate a higher yield the next day. So if you did want to get a point where you were not supplementing you would have to keep this in mind. My baby quite early on didn't wake between 7pm and 3am so I found I could pump an extra feed at 9:30/10pm to give as a top up during the day. After a while I started getting quite a good yield at this one. There are some benefits lost by not giving exclusively breastmilk. Formula blocks absorption of some of the nutrients in breastmilk and also changes the flora of the gut and leaves your baby slightly more open to infections so you might want to try and work towards that if you can manage. having said that, sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture and look at what allows you to be the best mummy to your child overall. I think it is easy to get too hung up on breastfeeding because as a first time mum, it is our very first responsibility to our child but at the end of the day it is only one of many and doesn't define you as a mum at all. Have you found a good lactation consultant who can come to your home? You don't mention how old your baby is or whether you are interested in trying to get her back on the breast but if you did want to (because if you could then it it would obviously be much much easier than exclusively pumping) it would be better to do it sooner than later (ASAP really) as the longer your baby has bottles the harder it will be. I managed to get past a bad latch and a preference for the bottle and am still breastfeeding a 10 month old but it was hard work and I couldn't have done it without good support.

Thanks, Kiwispiers. It seems the last 2 days I have been producing more. I usually get 150ml in the morning and 50 - 75ml thereafter for the rest of the day. So it seems that I am producing the right amounts according to others here. You just don't know when it's your first, do you? As far as topping up with formula, my midwife at the hospital told me that it is perfectly acceptable to do so, no point in having an unhappy baby who is hungry all the time! As long as she is getting the majority breast milk, then all is fine!

Not true MommyOficially, if you can manage without the formula great but it is absolutely much healthier for your baby to have some breastmilk rather than just formula, in fact the breastmilk has enzymes that will help your baby digest the formula not even mentioning the antibodies etc. Drs in the ME have no idea when it comes to breastfeeding ;( I know expressing is hard work, I did it for 2 weeks when my baby went on a breast strike and I found it exhausting so I admire your effort. You will start to get more the more you do it as your body gets used to the pump.

I've been expressing daily since 3 days ago to stock up on emergencies. I've been getting between 50-90 ml every time. Mornings are usually the best time (just after the first feed) and it helps to drink a glass of juice or water beforehand...

I was getting around 240 to 300 ml per time and about 4 to 5 times a day. I was eating a lot of steak which helps increase the milk and I gave up on garlic. I also soaked fenugreek in some water every evening and in the morning drink it just as a shot since its quite disgusting taste I do remember hearing from my doc that its not good to mix. its either formula or breastmilk. if not its gonna be though for the babies digestion.

I don't think there is a "normal" amount. I could usually get 50-100mL per session, some woman can get 300mL at a time others only 20mL. Many if not most woman need to pump more than once to get a singe feed. If she will feed from the breast at all (maybe in the night or first thing in the morning) then keep that up if you can as it will help stimulate your milk production more. edited by kiwispiers on 25/05/2011

When I expressed it varied - sometimes it would be 5ml sometimes 50ml. Expressing amount is not indication how much you produce really.
