Solids and flying...

Hi Mums!

Very soon I'll be traveling with 6 month DD to Australia, 14hr direct flight. She is currently on 2 solids meals per day consisting of pureed fruit or veg.
When I fly, is it easier and more hygienic to feed her baby food from the jars? If so, are these easy to get through security at Dubai Airport? Reason I thought the jars would be better is so I don't have any special preparation to do and they can be fed to her at room temp.

What is your experience with feeding baby solids (soft solids) on an aircraft?

Any help, tips or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks Shellly, I had no problems flying out of Oz either. The customs guys didn't even look at it.

Hey Twinkle Violet, I just flew into Oz and domestically within Oz and had the premade cartons of formula plus a few jars of baby food and the security guys were fine. I asked them if they wanted to inspect it and they said that its my baby's food so all is fine. ;)

Hi Shelly, no, we are leaving Oz in a few days. We are taking a combination of ready-made packs, and powder formula (in an avent container). I'll let u know if we have any issues :)

no issues taking in formula to Oz or leaving with it in the bags. if you have the pre-made stuff they may ask you like they do in the UK, to open and taste one of them, if you have bottles and a can of the formula (like we did this time around - small can) then we didn't get asked anything about it at all. The lady in Customs in Oz even said to me "its easy when you have a baby" to get through customs etc. LOL. I found that rather amusing. Even DH came back to Oz to meet us and he brought me more forumla (as they dont have aptimal in Oz) and he had no issues carrying the tin (with no baby) either. all will be good hun. edited to add: no issues with jars or sachets of baby food taking into or out of Oz either. edited by AussiePup on 16/04/2011

I'm interested to know about taking food/formula out of Australia too? I will be doing it very soon. Good to know there were no problems on the other end. Not sure when you're departing Oz, but I fly into Oz in about 1 week time so will be asking security when I arrive so I can be prepared for my Oz departure. Will post back when I find out, but if you fly out of Oz in the meantime and have issues can you please post back?

When I was crew we only ever had a couple of varieties and usually brands like Hero, where pretty much the second ingredient was sugar :(. I had a bagful of Ella's Kitchen leaving DXB last week and didn't even get stopped going through security. Ex-UK, though, they make you open them so it might be an idea to take one of those insulated cool-bag things just in case.

We have a 17month old dd and I have flown heaps of times (mostly with Emirates) and taken Hipp Organic jars and Ella's Kitchen sachets and have never had any issues. Have a great holiday! I did this too Shelly. Just took either Hipp Organic or Ella's kitchen sache's - that way I could squeeze it in his mouth without having to really use any utensils either. I've found the last 4 flights with Emirates they generally only have Veggie mix or Banana in Hero - never gotten a choice of anything more so I take my own. Happy travels. xox Thanks sweetie! Will take my own, for sure! How did you go leaving Oz though with the baby food in jars? Ok?

Just remember to check out the airport authority regulations from Australia back..... Agree that the EK Hero foods were awful. Take your own. As a tip, airlines are only allowed to heat up food thats warmed in a pot of hot water. They are not allowed to use their industrial strength microwaves for warming food once your Bubba gets to the stage of wanting chunky food.. :(

Take your own Shellly...EK give out the Hero brand and it's usually only the fruit one (banana) and if they have veg it's the potato (yuk) one. Ask the crew to warm it in a hot cup of water for a few minutes.

Thanks, nix.dubai ;) Good to know. I have started DD on the Hipp Organic brand, so thinking I'll have to take my own.

We were offered baby food on our last EK flight to JFK. I think we got one or two jars of the 'Hero' brand ... don't remember what flavours they were.

Thanks! Yeah I've had no trouble flying out with prepared formula water before either ;) Hoping and assuming the same will go for the jars. Good to know re the baby food on the Emirates flight. I wonder if they were a passenger's food being kept safe or if EK supply the food? Probably would prefer to take my own as I'm only getting DD used to a minimum selection of jar food.

Just flew out of DXB airport, with prepared formula and water, and nobody bat an eyelid. Also saw some glasses of hipp baby food in the plane galley. (Emirates)
