At the mall try feeding in the changing rooms in shops, that worked with my very distractible baby (until he discovered the mirrors). In restaurants they can often find you a quiet place, an office out the back or a dining area they can screen off, again I have found staff very helpful in this respect. As he transitions onto more solids then you can sometimes hold off on the feed and give some food instead, depending on how long you are out for.
Thank you all for the advice.
Dr. Samitha Rajkumar from Unicare (Burjuman) is the pediatrician we have been going to. She is really amazing and I would highly recommend her.
So last evening I expressed 120ml of BM, as we were headed out; unfortunately my DS didn’t take to it!!! I kept trying for 1/2 hour-in the feeding room and in the car, but he refused the bottle. Then I just BF him (in the car)
And I’m thinking if he is refusing BM from the bottle, he is not going to accept Formula from the bottle.
I will have to drop the idea of supplementing with formula and just continue BF him on outings.
If you'd be more comfortable bottle feeding in public (I understand a wriggly 7 month old can be a challenge) you could consider pumping at home and giving expressed milk in a bottle, that way your LO, who is clearly doing well on breastmilk can continue with this, and you would be more comfortable with the bottle feeding (also means daddy can take a turn!) . And you needn't worry about Spinneys running out of his favourite brand!
Be aware that if you regularly replace breast feelings with bottle feelings your supply will adjust accordingly and you may produce less.
Of course if you're sure you want to go with the formula sometimes, there's lots of brands to try, I was advised similac was most similar to breast milk so this might be a good starting point.
oh and here is a good overview of "from birth" vs "follow on" pros and cons

Your pediatrician is right, there is absolutely no medical reason for you to give formula instead of breastmilk, and every drop of breastmilk your baby has is far superior to any formula you could ever buy. In fact in a part of the world where so many Drs push formula, I wonder if you mind sharing their name, as many mum's out there are looking for a pro-breastfeeding Dr.
Its totally up to you when you start the weaning from the breast process, there are health advantages for breastfeeding that extend far beyond the 6 month mark and ideally you would continue to breastfeed during the introduction of potentially allergenic foods such as eggs, wheat/gluten dairy etc in order to give your baby the lowest chance of developing allergies. You can introduce dairy products from the 6 month point though and if you are doing so then there is no reason why you couldn't also introduce some formula.
I guess the main thing to consider is what is your long term plan/what are your priorities. As mentioned, there is always a risk of a baby starting to reject the breast over the bottle so you might want to consider how you would feel if that happened, how long you plan to partially breastfeed for etc. Missing feeds will potentially impact your supply, and you may find yourself being tempted to give formula more and more often, so you might end up weaning completely sooner than you had planned.
As far as from birth vs stage 2 formulas, just be aware that the rules for the from 6 month formulas are more lax and they are allowed to add flavourings etc and less healthy forms of carbohydrate than the from births. Personally I would go with a from birth, its closer to breastmilk and less likely to have junk in it.
I don't breast feed, but I use the stage 2 Similac for my now 9 month old (been using it since he was 6 months) I have heard that if you intorduce formula and a bottle to a breast fed baby, they may stop breast feeding and only want the bottle/formula... not sure if any of that helps you or not :) but it won't hurt him to give him formula. good luck.
I have been exclusively BF my DS for the past 6 months. He will begin his 7th month next week. As per his pediatrician he is doing really well and has asked me introduce soft solids, small amounts of water and continue BF. When I asked about formula-dr. mentioned it’s NOT required as DS will slowly increase his intake of solid food and reduce Bmilk.
I don’t mind BF at home but when we head out to the mall/restaurants, it is very difficult to BF him, as he gets distracted with every little sound and starts wailing -so we have to rush back to the car and BF there. It’s exhausting!!!
I want to introduce formula for outings only-say 2-3 times a week (I have tried expressing – DS gets hungry very quickly and I have to rush to the car to BF him again)
There are SO many brands of formula in the market (SO confusing!!!) Should I start him on Stage 2 (6mnths onwards) or for starters give him the Infant formula?
DH is supportive with the idea; but I’m feeling a little nervous going against the pediatrician recommendation.
Would love if anyone can relate/ share their experience….
Thanks
