DS (nearly 8 months) has just started getting angry and throwing what looks like a mini temper tantrum I guess is the best way to explain it. Clenched fists, grits teeth/gums, and gets angry. Am I right in thinking it's because he can't express his emotions? He seems to be doing it an awful lot lately!

I have a well baby check up next week so will ask about it, but just want to put my mind at rest now.

I have to admit I was pretty slack with the signing, I wish now I'd done it properly. A friend who was moving gave me the "sing and sign" DVD a few months ago and I was pretty skeptical and more or less just put it on for DS to watch the singing, without really planning on teaching sign. I only really ever actively signed "eat", "drink" and "nurse" and only when I remembered so I'm amazed he learned anything, he's 12 months now and has just started saying words and him using the signs seem to have coincided with that, sort of like using gestures to expand on his spoken nouns. So instead of saying "mama" and tugging at my shirt he now says "mama" and signs "nurse" but he has expanded the meaning himself to pretty much mean "want" so he uses it for food/water and even if there is a toy out of reach. He also waves his arm to mean water/drink, so he's not consistent but gets his meaning across. I think its worth teaching "eat" "water/drink" "milk/nurse" and trying to teach "more" and "finished". I also use the "no/stop!" sign for emphasis and he clearly understands it.

No, my DS (nearly 9 months) is just the same. It is so cute to see his personality emerging. Distraction is the key. I think that it is a graduated plan, to help us deal with the fully fledged tantrums heading our way in a year or so!

awww cute, he is starting to realise he has choices, and getting annoyed when he doesn't get his way. Distraction/change of scene is your best ally in this one, waaaay to young to be reasoned with. Now is a good age to start doing baby sign if you think he's frustrated due to lack of communication. Ben points at things or names them if he knows the word and then signs "want" which I find very endearing ;) apart from when he's pointing at my boobs and signing "want" in the middle of the supermarket. lol....I had to laugh at the "awwww cute". We thought so too at first, then we thought "oh no, we have an angry baby"! Baby signing sounds like a good idea and I have thought about it. At the mo I get my shirt pulled on and someone practically trying to climb in when he wants more!

Awww, bless. Can i ask if you don't mind, did Ben find sign easy to do and is it worth the money? I'm considering taking Lukas to the new community centre in JBR to start this soon, but wasn't sure how useful it is going to be. Lukas kinda has little tantrums now - throws head back and squeals for a minute!!! This is why i thought of the Signing classes!
