Thanks Sydneygal, I'm crossing my fingers that it passes soon. He's done Oz 3 times, the states and the uk twice and we've never had this problem.
You've also reminded me to go back for that vaccine. Idtotally forgotten about that one. Sorry to hear yor LO suffered so much with it. Hope they're doing better :)
hey flydiver - it's the pits when they don't sleep isn't it!! It must be to do with the time change and travel I'd say....we are off the UK in a few weeks time so I'm sure I'll have similar issues to deal with too! The dirty nappy is strange though, maybe avoid any fruit etc later in the day to see if that makes a difference? His body clock must be out of whack a bit but will hopefully settle. Travel to Oz is hard too - we did that when DS was 4 months old and it was a nightmare, but to be fair he was a nightmare sleepwise at that age anyway so it probably didn't make that much of a difference...
We brought him outside last night as a diversion instead of just lying down with him, to change the pattern....definitely won't be continuing it! Who knows what tonight will bring, we shall see....
Keep repeating - "this too shall pass".....
hugs
Oh I feel your pain. Our LO is the same age and is doing a lot of the same things.
We just got back from the uk, and since we arrived he's waking at 9.45 every night (after6.30 bedtime) with a dirty nappy. So we have to pick him up to change him and can't just shhhh him back to sleep.
He'll scream for up to 2 hrs till we can calm him back to sleep by a mix of picking him up when he screams very loudly, and putting him down with a shhhhhh, and staying n his room on the single bed. He loves it if he's allowed up to play, but Im so scared of staring a bad habit. I don't know why he's started going to the toilet at this time or how to change it.
The has NEVER woken up during his 12-14hr night sleeps, since he was tiny. I'm so upset by this change that I'm thinking of cancelling our trip to Oz next week, as I don't think it's fair on him, and am scared of what the time difference will do to him. This is very new as he's taken to time changes so easily in the past.
I don't have any answers for you, but thought it might help to know you are not alone.
thanks Nicole. Well last night shortly after I posted he woke up and was standing there with his arms out yelling (we have a vid monitor). So we changed tactic and went to him but brought him out to the living room instead (dimmed lights etc). He thought all his Xmas' had come at once and was so happy to be with mum and dad and was perfectly fine and happy (no fever etc). So we kept him up for half an hour, gave him some more milk then went to bring him in...He went off to sleep but was awake in ten mins as if he realised he'd been duped and started up again! As we knew he was fine, we left him for 10 min, then we did 2 45 shifts (one each) with us giving him cuddles etc, then settling him in the cot and lying on the floor beside him to comfort him without actually sleeping with him. He slept finally and then woke again a few times but these times within 5 mins went back to sleep by himself....phew!! Today he is full of beans :)
Hoping tonight is back to normal, we shall see. It's so hard when they don't sleep, I don't envy you doing it on your own - kudos to you!!
that is hard. From experience, if they receive the love, care and security they need to get back to normal, things will eventually settle down. Major illness really does throw them out of whack and I believe they feel out of sorts for some time afterwards. I know how tough you're doing it as I've been mostly solo mum for over 2 years now as hubby is based OS so have had to deal with all the ups and downs of illness, unsettled periods and teething and it is exhausting. Perhaps putting a mattress next to his bed and sleeping in his room for a time? Perhaps even just being able to hold your hand or know you are there will help? And if you and your husband do shifts so at least one of you is getting rest while the other is helping the little one might help. Knowing that you can get some full nights of rest may help get through the bad nights.
In Australia we have an excellent business that helps mum's out with settling/sleeping issues called BAby Bliss. They are on FB and also have a website (www.babybliss.com.au). Check it out as it may have some tips that could help.
Hi ladies,
So DS is a few days short of 14 months old and is normally a brilliant sleeper - 12 hours at night and 2 naps totalling 3 hours during the day, all self settling. In the past week and a half he's been quite ill following his chickenpox vaccine with high fevers and a bout of tonsilitis. We never leave him to cry if he's sick and for the past week or so have been sleeping with him (in a bed in his room) because his fevers would keep spiking and because he was so distressed :( However...he is on the mend now and is starting to have major crying tantrums that only stop when we give in and put him in the bed with us. We've tried patting and shushing and he seems asleep and just when we tentatively try and move away, he's up on his feet getting hysterical again! Ahhhh!! Hubby and I are soooo tired, he is NOT easy to co-sleep with either as he moves all over the place and it's not something we want to do ongoing, but we felt we had no other option when he was really sick and needed to keep an eye on his fevers. Any advice? Anyone been through this after an illness? :(
