My son just turned one..and I would like to wean him to formula or cows milk (still haven't decided on that!)

At the moment, we stopped giving him the bottle nearly 3 months back since he refused it..and his sippy cup skills are still a work in progress...

How did you wean your son at 1 year? To a bottle? Sippy cup? Any suggestion of bottle/cup brands that worked for you?

Introduce your preferred milk in a cup just like any other drink. Baby should consider it as another fun drink like say juice etc. Introduce it in small quantity like half cup ( to avoid wastage) ..whenever he is ready for a snack. The idea is to introduce him to the new taste without letting him know its a replacement for your milk. You can build it up slowly. If sippy cup skills are still developing you can try straw. Sometimes kids are ready for straw quite early. Slow weaning works best. I had no trouble with both of my children but I weaned them at 2. At that age they were much ready for a normal cup and quite used to the taste of fresh full fat milk. Hope that helps.

Follow on milk/toddler formula is a ploy by the formula industry. It's completely not needed. Full fat whole milk is more than sufficient for your LO. Baby needs 3-4 servings of full fat dairy a day, so make sure he's able to take in enough liquids via bottle or sippy cup before rushing ahead with weaning. Once you're certain he'll take what he needs without being nursed, replace one nursing session every week or so with milk. We have a Tommy Tippee sippy cup that works well for my daughter who is 13 months. It really depends on the kid what brand/type may work best for them. edited by Meagle on 12/06/2013
