Weaning onto solid - bad night... related?

Hello ladies,
My DS is nearly 5.5 months old. He started showing interest in food over a month ago.
I started giving him carrot puree last week as he can sit up pretty well. He didn't gag nor spat his food.
However, he had a couple of bad nights, one especially one during which he woke up every hour or so.
I decided to give puree a rest and started again yesterday... He is eating well, not a lot but seems happy with the food. But again last night, he woke up nearly every hour. He is not crying though, just moaning a bit, doesn't seem to be in pain, sometimes he goes back to sleep after I have rocked him a bit but he has also fed more (he is breastfed).
So my question is:
Could he be bothered by the food at night or is this just a coincidence?
When did you start introducing food and what food first?
Thank you

Hi French Nath, don't delay weaning if he's interested, many people struggle to introduce it so you should consider yourself lucky! Just adjust the diet a bit and keep trying new things, you'll find a lot of opinions about whether you should stick to one thing for several days in case of allergies but unless what you give him is a known culprit for causing allergies I wouldn't be too concerned about that. And as Kiwi suggested, do try fruits, they are easier first foods than veg.

Hi ladies, Thank you very much for your advice. I gave my DS carrot twice this week and I had 3 nights of him waking up every hour or so ;-(( Last night was slightly better... I managed to get 3 hour of sleep in a row! Woop woop! He is not constipated but doesn't poo a lot. I have given him some Bonnisan to try and relieve his tummy a bit. Anyway, I have postponed the weaning for now until he is 6 months old, he is only 5.5 now. It's just that he is so excited when he sees food. I'll follow your advice and start with sweet potato or pumpkin instead.

it could be related, when I introduced solids with my son it made his reflux (which had pretty uch resolved by that point) flare up again and it did affect his sleep. Carrot is quite starchy and starchy foods are hard for 6 month olds to digest so it can lead to tummy pain. Fruit and meat like lamb or chicken are good first foods.

Hi French Nath, carrot is a big culprit for constipation; if you see any signs of that, stop it. It's been a while since I was researching these things but I believe sweet potato or pumpkin (that may be considered similar to texture and taste to carrot) are ok as alternatives. Are you giving fruit? It may be easier to just do fruit for a few days and see if there's a difference. Again, if you suspect constipation at all, avoid banana and apple but pear is great and i think also peaches, plums, berries.

Thanks a lot for the tips. I have been feeding him between 11 and 1 so, as you said, he has time to digest, he goes down for the night usually around 9pm. I saw the signs of solids in his nappies but only the following day. I'll see how it goes tonight and I think I might wait still another week to be closer to the 6 months mark and then try sweet potato or squash as you advised. I'll make sure I have some gripe water as well. Thanks again

Ahh it can be a worry....are his nappies showing signs of 'solids' coming through? When I first started my boy on solids his first night was similar to yours but that's because the food hasn't 'passed through' him so I think he felt a few gripes. Gripe water did help the night discomfort but it was only one night. After he had his first full nappy the rest of his foods caused no probs. Only a suggestion, maybe not try carrot as first food as it is slow to digest (I did the same with carrot as first food but in hindsight, maybe parsnip/pumpkin/squash etc might digest more easily). I would suggest not to give too much food to start, and slowly build up over a few days? Also I gave food at 11am so it gave him plenty of hrs to move it through his tummy....not sure when you'd been giving food? Good luck, it may not be related to food at all;) edited by maxmistry on 21/11/2013
