Neither of mine slept through til I 'helped' them to. I breast fed DD1 to 13 months and DD2 to 15 months. With DD1 she was still having two feeds a night til about a month before I went back to work. I then had to do something about it! With DD2 I wasn't returning to work so it went on til 13 months when I was going to go away. I simply stopped offering her the breast one night and sat with her for three nights in the dark soothing her before she decided there was no point waking up - I was amazed at how quickly it could be done once I decided on how to do it and stuck to it. Both my girls are excellent 7- 7 sleepers now. If you are breastfeeding I think you can expect the night feeds to take longer to drop and you certainly shouldn't think about this until the baby is physically ready to go through the night which I think is around 6 months.

Sleeping through as in a 6 hours stretch (which def isn't through in my books) by about 4 weeks old, (probably would have been sooner if I hadn't woken him for a feed), a 10 hour stretch by 10 weeks (maybe sooner, I really don't recall) a few all nighters by 4 months and and then at 4/5 months the "regression" hit and we have had only a handful of whole nights since (now at 11 months). We were getting a 6pm to 5am (with a few self settles in between) recently but I reintroduced a night feed as otherwise when he woke at 5am he was up for the day and personally I would rather get up at 4 and feed him when he stirs and go back to sleep until 7am. I would say prior to age 4 months, he didn't self soothe, he simply didn't wake wheras once the regression hit he awoke frequently for his dummy or milk and start self-settling at around 9 months without "training". Older babies do tend to wake often, as do we, so it is more about whether they want help going back to sleep or are happy to just roll over and close their eyes like we do several times a night. At 10 months I started trying to soothe him without feeding wheras previously I had given him the dummy and if he cried automatically fed him, have never left him to cry, but never say never I guess.

There's always hope - I'm v lucky to be able to say approx seven weeks - from 9.30 to 8.45. I really feel for all of you with wake up calls during the night though as I remember those early weeks still! Forgot to say DS is now seven and a half months old... edited by Pav on 05/07/2011

Think with our first, it was around 11 months. Our second slept through the night (by which I mean a stretch of a good few hours, not from 7 - 7) very early, then hit what was probably the four-month sleep regression and woke up during the night for the next couple of years. There isn't really a "normal" per se, as every child is different as are the needs of the rest of the family. That said, I find this article quite helpful in discussing what is common with regards to babies and sleep: http://www.kellymom.com/parenting/sleep/sleep.html

DS1 was three months. Second DS is coming up on a year old and can usually sleep through the night unless his teeth are bothering him and then its an endless fight like last night.

hehe - sleeping through the night, as in "I don't hear a peep out of you from the time I put you to bed to the time you wake me up in the morning"... 9 months for DD and 11 months for DS. Bedtime is at 19h and decent wake up time is anything from 6h30... Anything short of that isn't "sleeping through" in my books... there are no prizes for just "sleeping at night" although even that can take a while! lol And counting from their first night feed also doesn't count, because that 22h/23h til 3h-4h only constitutes a 3h sleep slot for me! edited by Hello.Again.Kitty on 05/07/2011

I'm still waiting... DS 1 yr 6 days old. Our nights are hit and miss... sometimes he wakes 1-3 times a night (and that is a good night). I still dream feed him though because otherwise he does wake up wanting food between 1-3am - have tried offering water but nope... and he eats substantially through the day. The last week has been better though with only 2 nights of wake ups. So generally counting from DF time, 10pm he sleeps til 6am.

DS was "sleeping through" from 10pm to 5am from 7 weeks until about 4 months. Then the good times ended and he started waking hourly every night until his first birthday! Sleeping through the night properly from 8pm until 7am (sometimes even longer) since about 12 and a half months.

Define 'sleeping through'. :D My DD started sleeping through the night 7pm-7am at aged 19 weeks. And my definition of sleeping through is solid sleep with no dreamfeed/feed.
