sorry I know this is supposed to be on the other thread but want a quick answer. My sister in law is being told she may need one as her baby is taking his time coming. They are suggesting this as a first step, if not successful then an induction. She's really freaking out - a bit of a scaredy cat. Can anyone tell me what it's like?

I think deep squatting and bouncing on a birthing ball are supposed to help. If her baby is also posterior (mine was) then crawling around on all fours as much as possible is supposed to help encourage the baby to turn over.

yep that was the story with my baby, he was head down but he never "engaged"/dropped. Is she past her due date though? The way my obgyn explained it was that basically its the pressure of the baby's head on yoru cervix that causes it to begin to dilate (which can happen weeks before your due date or not until last minute) she said a sweep wouldn't work if the cervix was still tightly closed. In my babies case he was in a bit of a funny position with his head hyperflexed (tilted backwards rather than towards his chest) and he also had a rather large head (takes after his father), I think this made it hard for him to engage. I ended up with a c-section. Before having an induction though she should get an estimate of the babies size from the radiology department rather than just an OBGYNs scan as they sonographers are far more accurate in their measurements. Even then they can be wildly wrong. People can have quite large babies with no problems and others have quite small babies with big problems, position is often way more important. Unless they are estimating a 10 pound baby or she is already waay past her due date I would be inclined to wait and give nature a chance to put things in the right place and give her a better chance at a natural birth.

At the end of your pregnancy they check your cervix to see if you have dilated any and while they are "there" they can do the "sweep" which is basically using their fingers to sweep around the cervix and open to membranes. My Dr was going to do it for me but didn't as I was not remotely dilated so she said it would be a waste of time. Some people find it painful, I imagine you could take some panadol 30 min or so beforehand to make it a little less so. I would say though that if the baby is not yet in the right position, then their head won't push on the cervix, therefore the cervix won't dilate, therefore an induction might not work well. Is she actually past her due date or is just the size of the baby? I think a birth where the baby has been allowed to get into the right position to trigger labour is going to be easier and less painful regardless of size than one that has been induced early when the baby/body is not ready. I think the baby is head down, but she has not 'dropped' yet, by any means, I think it's purely the size of the baby they're worried about. Is there anything they can do to get him to move down further?

I had it with 2 of mine and in the bigger picture it was nothing to worry about. It brought on contractions in one pregnancy and in another the waters broke immediately after. It was not painful at all if I recall but what followed is another story :-) The end result was worth it though!

oh dear, doesn't sound good. My sister in law is very shy and not at all a good candidate for such things!! The baby is getting quite big now and they're worried about him getting tooo big. Is the clean and sweep the first course of action or can they do an inducement if it's deemed too traumatic for someone like my SIL? I think it's time for a sit down chat with your SIL - has she not had any internal checks throughout her pg? She will really need to get over her shyness as she'll find giving birth completely breaks down any embarrassment she may feel about it all!

It never worked for me but it brings on labour in others oh dear, doesn't sound good. My sister in law is very shy and not at all a good candidate for such things!! Is the clean and sweep the first course of action or can they do an inducement if it's deemed too traumatic for someone like my SIL? I skipped the sweep and was induced directly. The sweep is somewhat controversial in medical circles, I understand.
