What happened at your first pre-natal check up?

I just went to my OB/GYN yesterday for my first pre-natal check up. She took a urine sample, did an ultrasound to confirm how far along and expected due date (April 5th! Yay) and then ran through some info on what foods and activities to avoid etc and then sent me for blood tests. Also checked my height, weight and blood pressure. She checked my pre-natal vitamins that I'm taking too and said to keep up with them until I finish breast feeding.

I expected more, I thought she would do an internal exam and swaps as well (I'm not complaining to get to skip that unpleasantness but was surprised not to have to go through it).

She also didn't ask anything about what vaccinations I've had or my family history with regard to genetic disorders. My DH assured me that those discussions will probably happen at the next visit. We both really liked her and she seemed to know her stuff but I just wondered what the other Doctors are doing, if it's the same.

I think it must depend where you go. I just stayed with my GP and only went to my OB when i had to (20 and 36 weeks i think?) and she just did ultrasound staging scan, and i had glucose tests and blood pressure, measurements etc every month. I found it way less stressful than trooping down to the hospital every 4 weeks and sitting around for ages as my OB was invariably delivering/in an emergency c-section or something.

Sounds like they did all the usual things and you were lucky to escape without an internal!!! I hated these in first pregnancy and felt they were simply intrusive. Second pregnancy I avoided them!

Well, my case is totally different. I went for my first visit when I was 5 weeks and I only had an internal scan, nothing else (not urine or blood tests!). Dr. just confirmed that it was not an ectopic pregnancy. I asked about the rubella and he said to me next time we will check it. But I finally decided to go for an antenatal package which starts on week 12 so I won't have any appointment in the meantime.... Apparently is the way forward is the same as there are not many things a Dr. can do for you in the first trimester. So, answering your question, you got much more things done than me! PS: I went to AH.

sounds exactly like mine, I never had any internals apart from a swab at the end and a cervical sweep to try and induce labour, the don't need to if they do scans and your blood test show immunity from vaccines/natural exposure so they will check rubella etc then. If you have any family history with genetic disorders, just mention it, I don't think I was ever asked stuff like that TBH.

Never had internals until 2 days before i delivered. The blood tests will tell them what immunities you have so they don't need to ask you (its part of the pre-pregnancy panel). I was asked if id been pregnant before etc, but other than that, same as you. Congratulations!!!
