I dont know what is the matter with my 3 week old today, usually she is so happy and content, eats/sleeps well.... but today! She has been up since 6am with 1.5 hrs sleep since then. she is crying, ive fed her, burped her, shes poo'd and piddled, we've been for a walk, spoke to her, played in her baby gym - all the usual things to keep her amused but nothing is working.
Ive just put her down for the 5th time today and im sure the monitor (that would usually be silent for a couple of hours) will go at any point. I hate to see her upset but i dont know what is the matter with her. she doesnt have a temperature. Any advice from experienced mummys would be appreciated! :-(

Yes, growth spurts can well occur around this time and are completely normal. Is she cueing hunger more frequently (e.g. bringing fists to mouth, moving head from side to side as if "looking for" food, opening/closing mouth, sucking on things around her)? As KKS says, feed her as often as she needs (if it's a growth spurt this could mean a lot - may feel like constantly), and give her lots of cuddles. If it's a growth spurt, it will pass in a day or two. yes she is constantly sucking on her hands and looking at me with her mouth open. She put on 2lbs in her first two weeks so has always been a hungry horrace. She slept from 11pm-6am last night (woopee!!!). I'll make sure she gets plenty of cuddles and kisses today. I hope its a growth spurt or maybe the pressure change (with the thunder and lightening) unsettled her? Seems a bit happier this morning :-) Thanks for all the advice

babies are tricky little things, just when you think you have this parenting gig worked out they do something different and you have to go back to the drawing board 3-4 weeks most babies go through a growth spurt and want to feed constantly. Just hold her, talk to her, feed her when she cries. This stage only lasts about 18 years :O) good luck.

Yep, gripe water is from 1 month now, but infacol you can use from birth. Try lying her on her back and cycling her legs gently...or you could try a relaxing bath with you? Just re read your post ....she has probably just become more alert to her surroundings.....

when she is lying on my chest (on her tummy) she tries to dig her feet in and lifts her bum in the air? Just checked the packet of the gripe water, it defiantley says not for use on babies under 1 month and its alcohol free.

I would say she probably has colic. Put her in her car seat so she is upright and put her infront of the telly. my boy used to always sleep like that when he had colic. get some gripe water and try colic remedies...althought the only thing that really works in my opinion in Colief which isn't available here unfortunately I have gripe water but she is too young for it, so the packet tells me.... really? I thought gripewater was from birth! try the car seat and also try putting her on her tummy over your knees. Is she bringing her knees up at all?

It could just be a shift in her schedule due to a mini growth spurt. I know 6 weeks is usually a time where you see a difference, but no babies are the same. It depends on her cry really. She could be tired and unable to sleep for many reasons. The weather has turned weird and hot today, this could be a factor. Does she stop crying when you carry her? yes she does, in fact she'll fall asleep when im cuddling her but a short time after i put her in her bed shes crying again.

yeah, sometimes they just get out the wrong side of bed... just like the rest of us. It could be anything, but unless there's something obviously medically wrong (fever, sluggishness, runny nose, etc...) then just run with it and give her lots of cuddles... the housework and whatever else can wait... just cuddles and snuggles.

You should probably post on the babies section as that is where the new and experienced mums frequent. To an old mum she sounds like she is just out of sorts. It happens sometimes where there is nothing wrong and LO just feels blah (like we do sometimes). Nothing to worry about unless her temperature rises, she refuses to feed, vomits up everything she eats continuously or it carries on like this for more than 3 days. [i'>Congratulations on the birth of your daughter.[/i'>
