When to have a scan?

A scan at 12 weeks is no less accurate for gestational age than at any other earlier stage... Good to know, I'm not sure at what point they become less accurate, either way it would be a good idea to be sure of dates before the 12 week point if you are having the combined blood/nuchal test, as there is an optimal window for testing and if you were further along than you thought you might miss it, esp for the blood test. Back home we tend to have 2 or 3 scans; a "dating scan" if you are unsure of dates, the nuchal scan (12 weeks ish) and the anatomy scan at around 20 weeks. Here though my OBGYN consultation included a scan each visit, built into the consultation fee. We could tell the gender at 15 weeks (easier to tell if its a boy). I did get a bit paranoid that we were having too many scans but it is reassuring to see the heart beating especially prior to 20 weeks when you can't feel the baby's movements. I had my first scan at 8 weeks just to check all was well before I did a monster 23 hours of flying back to NZ and as PJ said it was just a jellybean but still amazing and reassuring to see. The 12 week scan when you can actually see little arms and legs moving around and eyes looking at you is way cooler though!

One reason to have a scan earlier than 12 weeks if if you are not 100% sure of your dates. Early on they can quite accurately estimate the age of the fetus as there is very little variation wheras later on you can get inaccurate dates if your baby happens to be a bigger than average or smaller than average. Given that in this part of the world Drs are very quick to induce, its a good idea to have an accurate due date and the Drs should stick to this for your whole pregnancy. Before 9 weeks you are likely to have to have an internal scan to see things clearly, although I was able to see my baby and listen to the heartbeat via a regular scan at 8 weeks, so it varies.

Unless you have any reason to suspect something is wrong - there is not much to see before 12 weeks. I had one at about 7-8 weeks, but that was because I had abdominal pain. The baby was more or less just a pulsating jellybean blob on the screen at that stage and the scan more or less just confirmed that the pregnancy wasnt ectopic and that its was not a missed miscarriage or anything. Had there not been concern due to the pain it would not have served much purpose (although, I was still excited to see my little blob on the screen). Some doctors order more frequent scans simply because this is how they make their money. At 12 weeks - you will see a human formed baby, checks can be done for a few different abnormalities and growth can be double checked. Another one at 20 weeks would allow further abnormalities to be checked for - and *** could usually be determined at that stage also if you wanted. Unless there is cause for concern, there usually would not be a medical reason for needing earlier or more scans than those 2.

For my DD, born in UK, we had 1st scan at 12wks, as everything was straight forward & no known problems. For this pregnancy (now 13wks), I had a scan with my OB at 6 weeks & then 11 weeks & then my nuchal translucency scan at 12 weeks at fetal medicine centre. More scans this time around as I had 2 previous MC's last year & I've been a nervous wreck getting through the 1st trimester! Luckily all is so far ticking along nicely, but it's reassuring to see/hear the bubba every few weeks!

I had my first in Australia and there it is pretty standard to wait until 12 weeks. I had my other children here in Dubai and they seem to want to scan you early and more frequently. Personally, I think it is good to wait until 12 weeks, unless you are experiencing any discomfort etc...

I was wondering when you start having scans?? Do you wait for 12 weeks or before? Thank you!
