Which formula?

I have fed my 4 month old pretty much exclusively with EBM, and at night she still latches on. I have started to get regular blockages despite expressing quite thoroughly every 3 hours, and have now started to cut back on expressing to reduce my milk supply and introduce formula ready for when we will totally move to formula (this seems to have eased off the blockages as well as I am able to keep to a better routine of expressing). Even as a newborn when she was a very hungry baby and my milk was not properly in, she didn't especially like formula hence why I have never given her great amounts. Now I do feel formula is becoming a necessity, I have a 4 year old, no maid, and a trip to the UK coming up, I simply cannot continue expressing every 3 hours, retain my sanity and meet both my children's needs. At the moment I am persevering with aptamil as you can also get that in the UK but I am considering switching brands, she clearly does not like the taste, and even when I just gave her a bottle of 4oz breast milk to 3oz formula she reluctantly drank some and then was sick a small amount about 5 times.

So which formula do you use? Have any of you had reluctant formula drinkers and found a great brand? Should I be expecting her stomach to go through a period of adjustment - ie. sickness or does this indicate aptamil doesn't agree with her? Any advice would be great thank you! I really don't want to overload her system with different brands and just want to get this right for her asap :-)

Just to add DD is loving SMA Gold! She screamed at me today when the bottle finished and I had to run off to get more (I'm loving the ready made cartons!). Thanks for the advice.

kiwispiers - I've tried a day back on the breast, and even with a bottle I have to take her somewhere quiet. Even up til 8 weeks before I started expressing she would feed enough to satisfy those initial hunger pangs and then fall asleep or lose interest, and then need to feed again an hour later. Even with a bottle she rarely drinks a feed in one go so you have to continually offer it. I just find this impossible, as soon as I'd get out with my 4 year old I'd be looking for chairs I could feed on, places I'd feel comfortable etc etc. I wish she was a great latcher and feeder but it's never going to be! I'm still producing quite a lot of milk so hopefully I can offer her mostly EBM til she's at least 6 months old but I really need to know she takes and is able to tolerate formula in case I need to swap quickly. Well done for persevering with your little man and I wish I was so willing! :-) Reidly, thats fab to know there's a similar alternative thats locally produced. That's my worst fear, that she loves it and all the supermarkets run dry! And yes the ready made cartons are fab, and will be great when we're home for summer. Thank you Kelly_C for the initial info. DD took the first bottle I offered really happily so fingers crossed we're on to a winner. No sick as well! :-)

Baby refusing to breastfeed by day and still happily latching at night?, sounds exactly like my wee guy at 4 months. I'm not knocking you for deciding to move to formula as it sounds like it is sensible in your situation but if you want to keep breastfeeding a bit, something that worked for me when my little man went on strike was to abandon scheduled feeding and give him little feeds all the time (literally 1 min one side, 1 minute the other, try again the other side then repeat an hour later or at any opportunity). It felt like he was getting nothing as he would pop off the breast really quickly and I had a couple of weeks where I was expressing all his feeds instead but I found it way too time consuming. I still feed him little and often but after I completely removed the bottles he eventually got more enthusiastic about the breast. (still only feeds for around 2 minutes at a time by day though but at least not crying about it.) He actually went up a centile when I started doing this despite never seeming to feed but I did stick with night feeding until very recently (9 months old now) as I wanted to make sure he got enough milk after starting solids at 6 months) I also found by day if I fed him in a dark room, away from noise and distraction, hung beads around my neck for him to play with while feeding and tried to feed when he was sleepy (just as he woke up or before I put him down, with the lights off) he would feed for longer. Sorry if that is not helpful, I don't blame you for not wanting to continue with the expressing, I found 2 weeks of it exhausting and I only have one child!

Am also a fan of SMA Gold since switching DD (now 3 months) from Nan HA. She's much happier. We're back to the UK for the summer so I also wanted something I could get there without problems. We've not had any issues finding it in Spinneys/Waitrose as Kelly_C says, although at first I could only find the small cans and as it's more expensive than some of the other brands (since it's imported) I do try and stock up on the big (900g) tins if I find them. Also I've been told (by DD's paed and a midwife amongst others) that S26-Gold is the same as SMA Gold if you can't get the latter - it's certainly less pricey - however DD really didn't seem to like it and so we've abandoned it and gone back to SMA Gold. She also loves the readymade cartons and they're v convenient if you're out and about. :)

Ive only been buying it for around a month, but havent had any problems so far, i buy two cans a week, always in stock in Spinneys and Waitrose (they dont carry it in Carrefour and Geant though) Glad DD is happier now, their little tummies can be so sensitive can't they?

Thank you, thats a good point about just getting one of the cartons first. Do you find it tricky getting SMA at times? I have generally stayed away from imported formula as I know it can just suddenly disappear off the shelves, but if its fairly easy to get hold of now I just want a happy baby! :-) I have kept her off formula for the last 2 days as I just about have enough supply and my happy, content baby has been back so I know aptamil can't be right for her poor thing. Will let you know how I get on!

I have DD on SMA Gold (Also available in UK) since i switched her from the boob at 5 months. I also tried her on Aptamil first, but she would scream the place down and not drink any. To be fair, i was also introducing the bottle, so it could have been either of these things. After smelling/tasting the Aptamil myself, i decided to try SMA as to be honest, i wouldnt drink Aptamil if you paid me! I found it really metallic tasting. DD seems fine on SMA and thankfully we had no problems at all tummy-wise making the switch. I noticed a slight increase in posseting compared to when se was BF, bit not much. Waitrose and some Spinneys stores carry the ready-made cartons of SMA so you could give it a try without investing in the big can. Hope this helps, good luck!
