Why is my little monster waking from 3-6 every morning?

My 11 mo has never slept through the night, but until recently he was waking 1-2 times to bf and then going straight back to sleep, going from 7:30 to about 7:00 every night, falling asleep on his own. I had just made the decision to night wean (but hadn't started yet, want to wait till dh is back from his business trip, no reason for him to miss the fun:) when he started waking at 3 and not going back down till 6! He then only sleeps till about 7:00.

If I feed him he cries when I put him back in bed, even after 30 minutes on the breast, whereas he usually ate in about 5 minutes. The first night I basically spent with him bf-ing the entire period with him crying whenever I stopped. If I don't bf him then he cries and cries. Last night I fed him once and then went in every 10 minutes to pat his back, he basically cried for 3 hours! I don't know what to do about this, it's awful to hear him crying and I am exhausted, this has been going on for 3 days!

I don't think he's sick, he has no fever and his appetite is excellent. I don't think he's teething, he isn't chewing or putting anything in his mouth and I don't see any teeth coming. He's been a bit cranky during the day, but so have I and I just put that down to both of us being exhausted!

Please, does anyone have any advice?

could it be developmental? http://www.thewonderweeks.com/ explains the changes in the first 2 years and how they affect the babies normal habits thanks for this, I just bought it online, I can't wait to read it to see if it helps us understand our LO better.

This post could almost have been written by me afew months ago! DD has always been rather all over the place about sleeping/feeding. Inexplicably sleeping through the night sometimes and waking frequently at other times. I stopped b/f her at a year and up until then always fed her at night. Her teething was certainly a problem at times but on reflection I think the issue was overtiredness. With her being my second I was always busy running around with DS and found it impossible to get her to sleep twice in the day. Now she's well over a year and can manage with one nap the situation is much improved. Like yours she was at least happy to settle herself off to sleep at bedtime. Hang in there....:)

That's good news LJB2010, nothing wrong with a baby needing comfort in the night, I'm sure we all do at times and we can hug our DH! As an aside, I've always wondered how women that BF manage to go 12 hours themselves without feeding? I would burst or drown in BM!!

Thanks Pentel - He has recently started walking so it might be related to that. Last night he was back to his regular schedule, so hopefully we have got through it. I wasn't actually asking for help to stop feeding him in the night, I have been waiting till I felt it was right for us. My issue these past few days has been that he has been waking at 3 and not going back to sleep till 6. Not quite sure how hearing someone else's kid slept through the night at 10 wks is really helpful, but thanks for your input.
