I take vit D and use Biocare from the Organic in Dubai mall as it was recommend by a naturopath/ homeopath and has no alcohol/ parabens etc as they use extra virgin olive oil as the base.

[ I too read up at kellymom but as we will be staying here this summer i don't see how to increase sun exposure for new DD. But, to add to my confusion, I just saw that doctor prescribed multivitamin drops that not only contain vitamin D but other vitamins plus iron as well. Would you give that to your newborn? I always thought they only needed more iron once they are around 6 months old? personally no, artificial iron actually blocks the bio available iron that is already in breast milk. Unless your baby was very low birthweight or premature then I would not give iron supplements. Vit D drops are all you need, try and get the alcohol free ones, they taste better. As far as being too hot, thats why I did the bathtime/massage outdoors, so that he would stay cool and get daylight exposure at the same time (indirect though, not direct sun). he was born here in early August, so it was def hot but that worked for us. I did the bath in the morning, late afternoon would work too.

A few days ago I started a post in the same subject and I finally decided not to give any artificial vitamin D to my baby but as other poster says I am very conscious with the amount of sun my baby gets. I prefer that than giving any supplements, but this is my personal opinion after reading some information on the subject. Yes, now I remember why this topic was familiar to me. Sleep deprivation had me forget that I had read about it here just a few days ago... Thanks all for your input on this subject. I will probably give the drops a go for the next few months, until the weather is cooler and we spend more time outdoors again, then I can still discontinue them. We do have a garden but it is just too hot to have her outside for any length of time at the moment With my older DD I am pretty sure she was fine, because she was born right when the weather was getting cooler so we spent at least an hour per day outdoors and then when it got too hot here we went back home where again we were outdoors everyday. So she had daily sunshine for almost all of her first18 months. With the new DD we wont be spending much time outdoors until it gets bearable here again in october or november. I am not sure about my vitamin d status, I did spend at least an hour or 2 outdoors throughout my pregnancy up until beginning of May or so (when it got too hot) edited by Lilli34 on 20/06/2012

Vit D deficiency is becoming more and more of an issue. If you choose not to supplement you really should take steps to make sure your baby has adequate exposure to daylight. Did you ever get your older child tested, if not you don't really know she wasn't low in vit D. I personally chose not to supplement though for same reasons as CB below, but I was vigilant about daylight exposure. My son was born in an August and I gave him his bath outside on the balcony every day and then gave him 20 min or more of kick time naked on a towel. (this was in indirect sunlight). if you can't do this then your other options would be to open a window and let your child have full body (clothes off) sunlight exposure while still under the AC, through window glass is not enough. I also got tested myself during my pregnancy to make sure I was not deficient, you have to take a fairly high dose of vit D before it will have any increase on the levels in your milk. BM is low in vit D, because we evolved to be outdoors a lot more, and in less/no clothes. Once kids start solids, most of the dairy products here are fortified so the need to supplement is less, I alsways try to get my child outdoors every day though, year round.

Just my opinion, but I probably wouldn't supplement, just because I don't really believe in giving kids anything (or taking it myself), unless we really need it??? I know we're currently indoors a lot due to the weather but surely still just the little bits of time outside are enough to generate enough Vitamin D???? I never had it mentioned to me with my firstborn in the UK, she's still under two & I would see no reason to supplement her... Nor will I with the next baby due in October.

Just came back from check up with new DD. Doctor recomends that she get Vitamin d drops. She is exclusively breastfed. I never gave anything to older DD and she was fine, but then again she was born when winter came so we had plenty of outdoor time. Would you give vitamin D drops? I am usually very hesitant concerning any medication and not a fan of supplements but then again if it is necessary of course I would give it to her. What would you do?
