If you have been living in Dubai then you’ll most probably know that things that are legal in other countries, or not made too much of a fuss off at least, will get you arrested in Dubai. A number of tourists visiting the UAE does, however, not know this and it ends up getting them into hot water while visiting the country.

To help prevent this from happening, the British Embassy has released a new advert warning tourists in Dubai not to drink too much this festive season. The advert dubbed “A Consular Christmas Carol” is based on the story “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens.

LEGO figurines are used to depict the story of “Edward” being visited by three ghosts: the ghost of Christmas past, present and future. Each ghost shows him a small scene from his life: how it was and how it can be, causing him to change his ways and celebrate Christmas without embarrassing himself or regretting anything.

Even though quite cute, the message in this video is very important. Dubai is an amazing place to visit with a large number of things to do and see but it is still a Muslim country with rules that Westerners might not be aware of.

Things such as PDA (public displays of affection) and swearing in public is a criminal offence that can get you fined, if not jailed and/or deported. A number of tourists also unaware that you actually need a licence to drink in Dubai. Alcohol is readily available from most big hotels and bars but being publicly intoxicated in Dubai will get you arrested.

Whether you are coming for a vacation or to start a new life in Dubai, it is important to familiarise yourself with the countries rules and etiquette beforehand. We have luckily already compiled a list of do’s and don’ts in Dubai to help you prepare for your stay.

If you are a permanent resident in the country and enjoy having the occasional drink, then we recommend getting a liquor license in Dubai. Contrary to popular belief, you are not allowed to keep liquor in your house, not even from Duty Free, or consume alcohol at a restaurant if you don’t have a liquor licence.

We encourage all expatriates to enjoy the festive season with their loved ones and make special memories this holiday but remember to keep everything in moderation. Especially in public.
