The UAE's Midday Break for Outdoor Workers Has Begun

For the 13th consecutive year, the midday break is back for outdoor workers across Dubai and the UAE, and it's no surprise the break is a welcome one.

The decree, declared by H.E. Saqr Ghobash, Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation, reduces the working day by two and half hours per day, between 12:30pm and 3:00pm.

The midday break began on June 15th, and will end on September 16th, 2017.

It comes as part of general safety and health procedures, which the UAE adopts, to help prevent any sort of work related injuries... And ensures no person is working under direct sunlight.

Temperatures have been reaching highs of 46°C in Abu Dhabi, with 80% humidity and around 45°C in Dubai, with 100% humidity in the evenings. Except, some vehicles we've seen have been recording over 50°C during the day.

In previous years, the midday break has coincided with the Holy Month of Ramadan, except this year fasting workers have had no midday break for up to three weeks now.

Companies will be inspected across the country

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has ordered over 18 inspection teams to observe the level of midday break rule compliance across the UAE, with the help of a smart inspection system.

Any company that fails and violates the rule will be fined AED 5000 per worker, with a maximum of AED 50,000 if the case involves a large number of labourers. Employers and owners also risk being degraded, and possibly even temporarily stopped from operating.

Nonetheless, there are exceptions; if it's a case whereby continuous work is required, the employer MUST provide workers with cold water, and things like salt and lemon. There must also be first aid, air-conditioning and sunshades available.

Is there any type of work excluded from the midday break?

Yes, there are some types of work that is excluded from the break; including mixing asphalt poured concrete if it is impossible to implement the work in one day. Plus, any work that prevents expected danger, reparation or damage, malfunction or loss. And all emergency work, like cutting lines, water supply, sewerage and others.
