The disease is also known by several other names including motor neuron disease (MND) and Charcot disease. The disorder is known to cause muscle weakness and atrophy throughout the body due to the degeneration of the upper and lower motor neurons.

ALS is the most common of the MNDs, however it is classed as a rare disease as if affects 1 to 2 people per 100,000 which is why the Ice Bucket Challenge came about. It is important to raise money to fund research into this disorder.

If you are taking part in the Ice Bucket Challenge remember to donate to the ALS Association. It is easy and you can donate by mail, phone or online, just log onto:

www.alsa.org/donate

Thousands have taken part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge using the hashtag #alsicebucketchallenge on various social media platforms and nominating their friends, family, corporations and famous individuals to participate. Here are a few of our favourite celebrity Ice Bucket Challenge participants

Our Favourites

Victoria Beckham

In our eyes the first lady of fashion can do no wrong and she executes her ice bucket challenge with grace. The sheer amount of water knocks her right over and she nominates her son Cruz to partake. #girlcrush

Bill Gates

Microsoft matermind and genius extraordinaire tells us why he believes in taking part in the ice bucket challenge and he does it with a twist. Mr. Gates builds his own ice bucket device and douses himself all in the name of charity.

Lady Gaga

The Monster Momma does not dissapoint with her artistic and weird #alsicebucketchallenge where she sits on a chair and douses herself in ice. What a great lady and we can't wait to see her live in Dubai!

Benedict Cumberbatch

Our favourite Sherlock Holmes gets iced, not once, not twice but FIVE times. It's all in the name of charity though but we've got to say that our favourite is his surprise helmet icing.

Katy Perry

She's known for her over the top performances and performances and Katy Perry concedes to the #alsicebucketchallenge by performing atop a climbing structure. She nominates just one person.

Paul Bissonette

Pro Ice Hockey player takes the #alsicebucketchallenge to the next level - literally. Watch him get iced atop a mountain by a helicopter using glacial ice and water - don't try this at home - unless you own a helicopter, safety gear and some rock hard abs.

Taylor Swift

Country music's sweetheart gets others involved in her ice bucket challenge and donates $100 for each participant. What a great sport - just watch the volume - the screaming is unbelievable!!

Conan O'Brian

The funny man takes a tongue in cheek approach to the ice bucket challenge. In true Conan style he goes slightly over the top in order to get his point across, but he gets it across just fine - with lots of flaying arms and shouting.

Justin Timberlake

We thought we'd end off with some eye candy. The always smooth, baby faced singer/actor/dancer triple threat got a bunch of people involved in his ice bucket challenge. Lets just hope that he remembered to donate some serious bucks to the ALSA.ORG foundation.
