How to Contour and Highlight Your Face

Learning how to contour and highlight your face can be tricky but is sometimes necessary to perfect your look. We are however here to give you a helping hand, so on behalf of ExpatWoman.com, here’s the talented Heather Allen to show us the tricks of the trade.

The products Heather has used in the video are both creme and powder products; the creme products buffed and blended throughout to give a more natural look, and can work better with dry to normal types of skin. The powder products are then used afterwards, to help set and further define the contouring and highlighting. Powdered products can be also be used on top of foundation or by themselves, and work better with oilier skin types.

To begin your make-up, start by applying a sheer layer of foundation. By applying the foundation first and adding your contour and highlight on top allows a more dramatic finish, whereas applying your foundation after allows it to be a lot more subtle.

Now begin with your creme products. The next step is highlighting, which essentially brings any areas of your face forward, and can bring light to those areas while lifting your look. You want to apply your highlight to the areas underneath your eye, the centre part of your forehead, your chin and the centre of your nose. Using a flat brush for this works better!

Once you’ve completed your highlighting, contouring is next, which effectively recedes areas of your face, bringing depth and dimension. You want to contour under your cheekbone, around the top of your hairline, your temples and along your nose and chin depending on your desired look. You may also add the contour to underneath your bottom lip for a fuller pout! Let’s not forget your jawline, too.

To blend in your handy-work, using a brush or sponge is essential. But remember to keep them slightly damp to ensure the product doesn’t dry out, or your skin. Start with your contoured areas, and press and push the colour into your skin, while pulling the highlighted areas up and into the darker areas to provide an added lift.

To finish, you should now use your powdered products, which will then add depth to all your contoured areas, as well as adding a brighter finish to your highlighted areas and overall look. Don’t forget to complete your look, you may add blush or even an additional shimmer to add any desired dewiness to your face.

Remember – don’t forget your setting spray!
