Philippine Independence Day Celebrations in Dubai

Celebrating Philippines Independence Day this week? Here's what's happening that you can join in with...

For the first time ever, the world's tallest building will light up in the colours of the Philippine flag as the country marks its 121st Independence Day.

Burj Khalifa will be dressed in red, white and blue from the national flag of the Philippines on the evening of June 12, marking the day the country gained freedom on June 12, 1898 - after 333 years of Spanish colonial rule.

Consul-General Paul Raymund Cortes confirmed to Gulf News that Burj Khalifa will display the Philippine flag at 9.40pm on Wednesday.

“This monumental occasion manifests the collective pride and joy of the Filipino community in the UAE and their appreciation to the multicultural community in the country for welcoming them in this diverse society,” he said.

The 828-metre tower will also display the flag's three yellow stars and a sun with eight rays. The sun signifies the eight provinces that revolted against Spain, while the three stars represent the three island groups of the Philippines: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The white triangle stands for equality, the blue stripe signifies peace, truth, and justice, and the lower red stripe represents patriotism and valour.

Aside from Burj Khalifa, Dubai Festival City's record-breaking Imagine laser and light show will also mark the occasion.

On Wednesday, the customised show will display the colours of the Philippine flag for the first time and will project a unique presentation on Philippine's rich culture and history to mark the Asian nation's 121st Independence Day.

The cutting-edge multimedia entertainment show uses light, fire, and water to display a story on a 360-degree field across the mall's waterfront, which spans more than 20 acres.
